    Default HID Upgrade..

Yes, I know, we've been round the block lots of times with HID kits and the legalities of them all, but I've got a question that someone who works for Vauxhall might be able to answer...

We all know that to be fully legal you need actual Xenon headlamps, washers, and a levelling system, and anything else could invalidate your insurance... Question is - how much would Vauxhall charge to have it installed on a Vectra C that didn't originally come with them? I appreciate you'd need to change the headlamps, add the washers, the levelling sensors, change the ECU etc, but how much would this acutally cost...?

    Any ideas...?

    Cheers

    no no and no
if you ask the man that does your mot and ask what it does say about it and he will tell you its just the beam patten that has and must be there and you dont need washers or a levelling system

it will be the length of the lamp that you put in that will change the patten of the light

The MoT isn't the qeustion mate, it's the law according to the Department of Transport - and I'd hate to find my insurnace was invalid jsut because I'd fitted an HiD kit, even if it did pass it's MoT... The quote from their website has been on here many times before, so I won't put it on again...

if you look on ebay there is vectra hid headlight
i think they were around £80 each plus the lamps for them

but do remember after you fit them it will need to be tech 2 to get all the leveling to work

if you go the full hog there will be no probs with insurance

but this way isnt going to be cheap

I've decided not to risk it & have orderred Philips X-treme bulbs for Hi & Lo beams - They may not be as good as HID but they're legal & both beams for £50 saves me a wedge

I think, IMO, the simple answer to that one is it will cost you nowt, as no Vx dealer will do it for you. I don't know if it is technically possible - possibly but at huge expense I reckon. Because it's not something that Vx offer, they won't have kits to do it with the exact parts and if they (the dealer) comes stuck then they won't get any support from Vx.

There are so many things that could go wrong, in terms of it not subsequently working, that I would think a dealer will just avoid it in the first instance. It could end up costing them if they'd quoted you a fixed price and then found that there was a lot more involved, or it could end up costing you a huge amount if they were doing it on a per hour and parts basis.

Cheers mate. I know it wouldn't be cheap, but cheaper than not having the insurance pay out if I wrote the car off... If it's too expensive I won't bother, but it's a route I'm jsut having a look down...

The honest answer is I don't know what would be needed for a full retro-fit. Obviously the headlight units with the power packs (ballast), then I would expect different wiring looms would be needed, wouldn't have thought different ECU - just Tech 2. The washers are easily fitted as proven by Andyvec so that leaves the self-levelling part which again I would think is some parts, possible different looms and programming of body modules etc. Not sure if I've missed anything.

Would be interesting to find out exactly what is needed - got a feeling somebody posted up before, may have been in GG's HID How 2 thread.

If a car passes an MOT surely there are no insurance regulations applying as the car is road legal?
