    Default Dead Vectra

    My 1.8 LS is dead!

Was driving her home from the shop earlier and get the little spanner symbol. Curse every god that's ever existed and pull over.

Stop the engine, have a look under the bonnet and at least the engine's still in the right place!

Well, re-starting the engine and the light goes. Booked her into local garage (independant, not main dealer - don't use the main dealer!) on Monday and didn't think any more of it. Then she started feeling a bit low on power and jerking as if only 3 cylinders were working!

Then curiousity got the better of me so I looked at the plugs, reasoning that it could just be not sparking. The plugs didn't look in a good state so I popped to Halfrauds and grabbed a set of Bosch plugs and popped them in - no warning lights and felt a lot better, thinking I'd sorted it I headed off out.

Just now she's flashed all her warning lights on at me for everything and is jerking forward and backwards when I'm trying to drive!

Thinking now it has to be either fuel or spark related, What are the odds of the coil pack being dead? Is it more likely to be fuel related and if so, is there anything I can do to test this?

If anyone's got a diagnostic code reader and they're at the seaside (Margate) tomorrow then feel free to call via my place - I'll do you a bacon sarnie!

Anyways, there's my moan - any light anyone could shed on what might be wrong!

Oh, thinking about it - it all seemed to go wrong just after I'd visited a different petrol station to the one I normally use! I filled up this evening at a local garage when I got the sparks so maybe that helped - wouldn't explain it being really bad now though!

Would dodgy fuel cause this? If so, what's the likely culprit?

    Thanks for reading my whinge!

If you have filled up with some dodgy fuel then it's possible that it may have killed one of the lamda sensors that sense the air/fuel mixture in the exhaust gases. If one of those has gone then the car will run very rough as the air/fuel mixture can't be accurately determined - would also explain your dodgy looking plugs.

Give Plasma a shout as he's kinda in your neck of the woods and he has a code reader.

    Thanks Duncan,

I've just looked at Plasma's profile and he's a fair way away from me - certainly a lot further than I'll risk taking the Vectaru with how she is!

Looks like it's the garage on Monday and a hope for the best that it's not the Fuel Injection Pump or something equally expensive! I saw a quote on another site that someone had for a replacement Fuel Injection Pump of £1900!

    Ok,

Just went out in the Vectra and she was all perfect - started the second I turned the key and ran like a dream.... for 5 minutes.

As soon as she was warming up then the fault started again.... I don't have a clue what it is!

Hopefully the garage will be able to get some info from the diagnostic codes.....

Sounds more like a dis pack than anything to do with fuel, basically dis packs are what replaced the old fashioned coil. Hopefully the garage will confirm this for you tomorrow.

Oh, and the £1900 for a fuel pump was probably for a diesel!

    Good luck.

Sounds like the coil/dis pack to me. oh and the £1900 is for the CDTi fuel pump. Not sure what engine you have but its fairly common on the Z18XE after about 60k
Now I need a turbo to keep up!
