    Question Antenna amplifier ground location

    Hi all,

Sorry if this has been covered before...

Could someone please tell me how the antenna amplifier (pictured below) is grounded? (I would like to verify the soundness of the grounds to hopefully improve poor AM reception)

The wiring diagrams make it look like it has its own ground, but it looks to be made of plastic.

    Thanks.

That looks like my photo from changing roof aerial, I think you will find that it earths through the body where the aerial base is fitted.
It is a serated washer that makes contact with body.

Sorry, I couldn't remember whose photo I borrowed - I was too lazy to take my own

Thanks Ian - is the wire from the antenna to the amplifier shielded? (I thought it looked to thin to be shielded!)

Here's Ian T's original posting that I borrowed the image from.

It's earthed to the body as Ian says. In the loom it looks like you have the aerial coax cable (thicker grey one) and the amplifier remote (the thin one)
AM reception is generally poor on todays stereos as the manufacturer doesn't think it's that important to the consumer and so use cheap inferior components to do the job. Infact about 5 or 6 years ago some after market manufacturers made cheap entry level cd headunits with FM only tuners to bring costs down even more.

Update: I managed to fix my poor AM reception today. I removed and reinstalled the radio and now everything works well. Must have had a flakey antenna connection at the radio...
