Default Plastic doughnuts and the 3-legged donkey effect

While driving into a car park in Milton Keynes the other day, I noticed something odd about the handling. I got out, and found a nice big self-tapping screw sticking out of the shoulder of the NSR tyre, and most of the air gone.
So, I put the space saver on to get me home. This is the first time I've been forced to drive on one of these plastic doughnuts, and believe me, it's not a nice experience. It was noisy, and the car felt like a 3-legged donkey on roundabouts, even when driving carefully. On the other hand, driving home at 50mph, I got 50mpg!
I was in a hurry to get it sorted out, so I nipped into my local National Tyres place. They weren't happy about fixing it, so I needed a new tyre. They quoted a scary £175 for a Goodyear, but they had a deal on Avon 95W ZV3's, so I had both rears replaced (they were down to 3mm) for £240, which wasn't what I wanted to spend my money on, but it solved the problem.
I also found out why they supply a space-saver, as the wheel I took off filled up most of the boot!

    Oooh, ta.
I'll have a look next time (which won't be long, the way a 3.0 goes through tyres). I was in a rush this time -normally, I'd spend some time shopping around, but I had to get a proper tyre put back on!

Not on a Signum it won't (or an estate). Wheel well is too shallow. Pity as I'd have done the same long ago after having had to use the spacesaver for a 20 mile journey home - not nice.
