For a good few weeks now i have been seriously thinking of changing my career. I know that there are a few bobbies on here and was wondering what kind of job experience and qualifications you need to apply to the force. Obviously all forces are different but the Strathclyde website doesn't give you a great deal of info.

I'm currently in the process of applying for the police but the recruitment process here is painfully slow.

Taken this from the west yorkshire police site:

    Education & Skills
Qualifications are not a requirement for appointment but for training and
development purposes you will be required to produce examination certificates if
recommended for appointment. If you are still in, or have recently left, full-time
education, we may also ask for a referee from the relevant institution.

Like you say, all forces vary on certain points but I think this will be pretty standard across the board.

Send him down to Hampshire, they never have enough officers, mind you it's probably budget related rather than lack of willing ppl.

I've been in for thirteen years and sad to say I can't recommend it as a career to anyone. It would take me too long to go into detail, but there is a mass exodus of experienced Police Officers taking place at the moment.

Forget any thoughts of 'making a difference' or 'something different every day', you will spend every day having to justify everything you do to a multitude of people who have never done the job. If I didn't have a family, I'd be out in a shot.

Here here. I left Northumbria for similar reasons and a good few others. Lack of a judicial system in this country for a start.

    Quotas!!!!! HAHAHAHAHA
You should try getting into the PSNI. Its an absolute joke. I got through the initial aptitude test, then the second round of interviews, then the medical THREE TIMES and was knocked back every time based on fulfilling quotas.
On the bright side but, things have changed for the better

It's not the job that I joined 11 years ago. it has changed a huge amount and in my opinion not for the better.
The government is far too involved in policing and police forces are heavily target lead, which anyone who works for any government organisation knows, isnt relevant to what is actually needed or whats going on.
They seem to have forgotten that the police arrest criminals and try to keep people safe.
Look at Thames valley Police having just recruited two 16yr old Police Community Support Officers....I mean what the hell is it coming too!!!

Saying that if you joined now then you would never know any different, so you'd just get on with it.

Read this though...sums it all up really:

I'm Just a Man Like You.
I have been where you fear to be,
I have seen what you fear to see,
I have done what you fear to do,
All these things, I have done for you.
I am the man you lean upon,
The man you cast your scorn upon,
The man you bring your troubles to.
All these men, I have been to you.
The man you ask to stand apart,
The man you feel should have no heart,
The man you call the man in blue,
But I'm just a man, just like you.
And through the years , I've come to see,
That I'm not what you ask of me.
So take these handcuffs, and this baton,
Will you take it? Will anyone?
And when you watch a person die,
And here a battered child cry,
Then do you think that you can be,
All these things that you ask of me?

    Anon.

If you like the sound of that...Then the best of luck!!
