Eek 04 Vectra Estate Rattle - Shockers ????

Hi all, I have a 04 Vectra Estate 2.0 DTi, it has 54k on the clock and over the past 10k it has developed a rattle when going over bumps or knackered roads and pot holes (most of the time). After reading other threads I jacked it up at the weekend and check springs, wheel nuts, anti-role bars and all looked well check front and rear. Grabbed hold of everything and everything was firm with no noise. If you bounce up and down on the car whilst stood still you don't hear anything. I have had it into the dealer and I told them I thought the shockers were gone but they rekon nothing is wrong and it is fine .. rubbish. All I can think is that it must be the Shockers, I once had an Elise that rattled like hell and replaced the shockers and it was fine.

Any thoughts folks ??? also where is the cheapest place to get some standard shockers from as I'll change them myself if it is them??

    Cheers.

Sounds like your Shcoks mate, mine had the exact same symptom's and it was the shocks.

Try Euro Car Parts for the shocks, Bilstein B4's are good OE replacements and cost about £30 each.

My old DTI rattled like hell, shocks and springs cured it. My 1.8 had snapped springs with the same results, rattly as hell on uneven roads.

Don't get Vx shocks, they are not good, go for one of the aftermarket kits like Bilstein etc.

p.s Vx wouldn't have changed the shocks on warranty anyway, not on an 04 car, you'd be lucky to get new ones out of them on a 6 mth old car.

I had all sorts of noises from one side at the back, thought it might be the upper arm but it was the shock leaking that made me change them and now all the noises are gone. There were supply problems with bilsteins dunno if they've been sorted yet .

    Wink

    Thanks for that.
Had it up on a ramp at the weekend and did not see any leaks.
Its all a little odd as secured the exhausts in a couple of places with tie straps the other week as when rattling the exhaust it seemed to be the source of the noise. And then for a whole week I could travel without the radio on full blast but then the noise returned. So we put some more tie straps on this weekend but this time the noise remains. Perhaps I will take your advise and sort the shocks, it may be the cause as the roads around here are terrible.

other VERY well known causes are worn antiroll bar links , worn mounts..and also quite commonly worn void bushes in the upper arms leading to the knocking..

Dampers would be a good bet if the outer casing is damp or wet..but you can't test the suspension bushes by just wiggling them..preloads on them mean that the best way to check them is when disassembled..
