Don't know about costs but you can't claim on your insurance for cambelt failure.

Do not crank it over, just leave it until your mates had a look.

If it is the same engine design as our old cinquecento then we had the same thing except it was the alternator bearings which had failed (initially thought it was the cambelt).

Might be worth disconnecting the belt to alternator and taking a look. If it is cambelt, then depends if you do it yourself or pay for it to be done. Yourself it'll probably be easier to get a recon engine so what maybe £500. A shop and your probably looking at double that.

    Oh great....

Hope for the Alternator for you, otherwise, prepare for your trousers to be pulled down and your bottom to be spanked.

    Preverbially, of course.

deepends on the engine, on much older engines where the compression was low, you could get away with just fitting a new belt, but with more modern engines the valve to piston clearance is usually a lot less. If the valves are bent then the cylinder head will need to come off and new valves fitted (upwards of £500). If the compression is really high it could of dented a piston or two which means full rebuild (£1500 - £2000). If the recovery chap new what he was looking for (and the check is fairly basic) then I cant see the alternator being the cause.

The recovery man will off needed to crank it with the oil filler cap off to see if the cams were turning, and to be honest for the short length of time he cranked it for, any damage would of been done when it went, not by him.

Sorry for the bad news, it may be the the recovery chap doesnt know what hes looking for and it mya be cheap to fix, but like I said its fairly basic thing to check for.
