    Angry Re-spray dispute

    Hi,

Can anyone help me, I have taken my car in to have a few marks sorted in my paintwork (not that I really caught it on a fence post!). Anyway I've taken it in, and they have resprayed the whole bumper and merged in the rear quarter...

When I came to it, it looked like they hadn't cleaned the car properly before spraying it, and there were bits in the paint and under it... At the time they tried to blag there way out of it, but said 'it hasn't been polished yet, and that will sort it out' anyway after wait for 20 mins... It was still obvious that it wasn't right. I was told that 'it will never look as good, hand painted as a machine sprayed panel'. Personally I think that's rubbish? am I right?

I have left it with them for a few more days with the hope that they will sort it out but when I passed the place this morning it only looked like they've left polish on it... and will hope to blag it again...

Can anyone help, give me an idea of how good this should be? If they are not willing to sort it out, do I sort a massive discount... They want £400, for it?

    Any advice would be welcome.

    Thanks in advance

If they're charging £400 for a rear bumper respray with rear panel merging then it's a bit pricey (unless there was other stuff?). For that price you should expect a job where you can't tell it's been painted and certainly not have bits in and under the paint. Any decent sprayer will get a finish very close, or even better!, than a machine sprayed panel. Under really close inspection you would still probably be able to tell the difference, but we're talking up close and being really, really finicky. To the normal eye you shouldn't see a noticeable difference, and certainly not the finish you've currently got.

Get then to do it properly. If they point blank refuse to do anything about it, and you need to pay them (to get your car back) make sure you clearly mark on any invoice 'Paid under dispute' and score out, initial and date any bit that says about job completed to satisfaction type thing, then you can follow it up with a claim to get your money back and any additional costs to get it resprayed elsewhere. You'll probably need to get an independant 'expert witness' to inspect it to say that the job isn't up to scratch.

Whether you're prepared to accept it as it is for a sizeable discount is up to you - depends how bad it is. Any pics? If it was me it'd be getting down properly as in the end it could affect future resale value of the car - again depending on how bad it is.

I was shocked how bad it was to be honest... what do you mean by a 'expert witness'?

    Can I call someone?

    Great advice tho, Duncan.

I think Duncan means take it to another bodyshop to get their opinion..

if there's specs of debris in the paint then they haven't been clean enough in the cars preperation...Mrs GSi's old vec C was completely resprayed by hand and the finish on that was far better than the factory one..you're just being spun a line to make you accept the car...I know i wouldn't..

I've got a m8 that has his own body shop and mobile touch up van, you shouldn't be paying much more that £120 + vat per panel , IE 1 wing £120, the bumper £120 etc, on my old car I had the boot lid, rear bumper done and all blended in for £240 + vat which was pretty much the full back end and it was hard to tell the difference to the original paint,

I couldn't tell the difference to new and old , there was a slight colour change but only visible at night under the street lights, I wouldn't put up with it

Just to let you know what's happened...

I have been intouch with Consumer Direct, and they told me the same as Duncan (Thanks again...) and to write a letter/ email of complaint to the owner.

When I got to my car up on Friday, it was better, but not great.... I complained again, but this time I was talking to the sprayer (the guy who did the work). He was a bit more helpful, but still a bit condersending!

They reduced the bill by half and said they would re-do the work I wasn't happy with.

The rear quarter is ok / acceptable now, but they haven't cleared the bumper properly, which has left bits under the paint work.

The car is booked in for friday, and hopefully this guy will do it properly...Third time lucky!

I'll keep you updated, and try and get some pic's for you!

    Thanks for all the advice,

    Steve

    No problemo.

Let's hope third time lucky will sort it out, otherwise it'll be time to reject it and looking to get it done elsewhere.

yep youve deffo done the right thing. They have the right to be given an opportunity to put it right. After that if its still naff, pay for the parts that are okay (no-matter how much that hurts!) and refuse to pay for the rest.
