    Default Oil Grades

Whats the difference between 15w/40 Diesel and 15w/40 Petrol engine oil?

Would it be possible to use diesel engine oil in a petrol engine with aim to reduce smoking?

in short NO...there is minimal difference in the oils and if the engine is smoking then it's because it's burning the oil...and changing grades/viscositys won't help at all..all that will cure that is better bore sealing..

I think my problem is with valve stem oil seals, smokes on start up from cold, not on acceleration but starting off after overrun. Worse when engine is hot after 20miles on motorway. Just had head gasket replacement but valve stem seals not replaced because was not an issue before head off. Compressions seems fine so piston rings not suspect.

Diesel engine oil is designed for those engines on traditional oil change intervals (up to 20K miles, 12 months) and can deal with the increased amount of acid in the oil, which standard oil does not protect against

This is not a problem with the latest long life Synthetic oils, although a diesel version is also available
