do you hear a whooshing noise when the turbo kicks in? Can't see why this would be speed related but worth a try (maybe higher load at higher speeds)

If you do its the turbo hose that has split

come to think i have'nt noticed a whooshing noise, but when the car is stood idle you can rev the knackers off it and it will rev all the way up and above 5000 rpm and the spanner light won't come on at all. The spaqnner light only comes on when the cars mobile.

thanks for the reply by the it's very much appreciated.

    That's the automatic speed limiter.

is the speed limiter expensive to resolve. Or is it repairable

would that also explain the loss of power from initial acceleration.

Check your vacuum hoses and MAF sensor - these have been the most common causes I've seen of this kind of problem.

found the prob. yep you got it. split vacume pipe on the on what looks like a little pump on the front slam panel just to the left of the battery cover.
put my finger underneath it and it was sucking in air. just rplaced it with some
rubber piping and some advance and retard piping from the local motor factors.
oh man thank god for that, i had feeling my wallet was gonna get whole lot lighter down at the local stealers.
many thanks Juzzy, i'm very happy person tonight.

I had exactly the same fault. I was tootling along the M6 then all of a sudden, the spanner light came on and car went into limp mode. I stopped at services, turned off engine for 5 mins and restarted ,all was fine, no spanner light and full power regained. When I got home I found the rubber collar had perished on the vacuum pipe. Dealers stitched me up, cost £4 for a bit of rubber sleeving, but I saved money by identifying the fault with the assistance of the wonderful folks on this forum
