    Default Air bags

has anyone who has had a smash actually had their airbags deploy??
the reason i ask is, my mother smashed an astra 1.4i about 3 years ago, hit a stationary car at 40mph, the airbag didnt deploy, she didnt want to cause a fuss at VX, (personally i would have torched every VX dealer in the country but thats just my evil streak)

then this week i found out that the girl i goto the gym with, had an astra hit her corsa at 70mph from behind, put her and her 3 daughters in hospital (after they were cut out of the wreckage), her airbag didnt work which i said it wouldnt anyway as its not a front impact, the car behind didnt deploy either

she phoned VX to ask why and got told it none of your business as you were not the driver of the other car (great dealer in Wton, cant do to little for you)

so im just interested if they do actually work, unlike seatbelts you can test them.

at least someone has had them work then, wonder if they only play up in the astra, spose thats the trouble with having safety features you cant really see until they work or dont as the case may be

In my job I go to several collisions every week.
You would probably be surprised how often the airbag(s) doesnt deploy.
What people forget is the force at which an airbag deploys, therefore they need a HEAVY impact to deploy them. Otherwise the airbag would cause an injury. The crumple zone of the car is the first line of defence, and the bags deploy if the impact is severe enough.
In the US airbags deploy in less severe impacts because the usage of seatbelts is a lot lower.
It is extremely rare, for an airbag to fail.
    So there!!

Air bags are typically designed to deploy in frontal and near-frontal collisions, which are comparable to hitting a solid barrier at approximately 8 to 14 miles per hour (mph) (13 to 23 km/h). Roughly speaking, a 14 mph (23 km/h) barrier collision is equivalent to striking a parked car of similar size across the full front of each vehicle at about 28 mph (45 km/h). This is because the parked car absorbs some of the energy of the crash, and is pushed by the striking vehicle. Unlike crash tests into barriers, real-world crashes typically occur at angles, and the crash forces usually are not evenly distributed across the front of the vehicle. Consequently, the relative speed between a striking and struck vehicle required to deploy the air bag in a real-world crash can be much higher than an equivalent barrier crash.

Put it this way, if the airbags had not worked when i had my "accident" i doubt whether my son or i would have walked away from it as we did.
Every one in the car went off
