Since starting a new job 3 months ago I have been travelling the north western corner of the M25 from the M1 round to the M4 lately and mostly in the mornings.
I started off as I MUST BE PROGRESSING AS MUCH AS POSS and would be straight out into the outside lane as quick as possible sitting on the bumper of the car infront constantly jumping up & down on the brake pedal, clutch and accelorator. If my lane became stationary I felt the urgent need of getting into the middle lane as my lane isn't moving. I'd get to work absolutly wound up with feet & legs feelng like I've walked 5 miles.
I then started to realise there was a jucntion I could hop off and back on at one jucntion along & it was this traffic entering casuing huge hold ups through people doing as I did by coming off the slip road & having the need to get to the outside lane as quickly as possible before any lane exceeds 10 mph.
I now enter a start stopping motorway at the latest possible or from slip lane 1 of a 2 lane slip way. It's quite funny, you watch people diving into a space they've seen appear and cut across the chevrons whilst I pass behind them & clear another 30 or so car lengths.
I then stay in th N/S lane for probably 80% of my journey constantly under taking people along with the lorries. I exit at my junction and am usually over taken by people exceeding the speed limit who I've earlier passed on the inside as they were so busy taking paint samples of the car infront. I then arrive at work untense as I haven't been getting frustrated of the start stop traffic and having to judge gaps to dive into.
It stands to reason really, most people on their way to work are in their car on their own & couldn't care less about anyone else and so sit bumper to bumper in the fast lane because they have no reason to move over . As soon as the next one squeezes out of the middle lane into the fast lane someone in the fast lane touches their brakes and everyone else who's sittng on their bumper starts jumpng on theirs.
Driving amongst the lorries there is a hell of a lot more braking distances left and so a lot more distance is travelled if & when coming to a stop.
I now actually enjoy the drive as I find it so amusing I can now sit back watching how mad people in the outside lane behave in rush hour and laugh at how little progress they make.
At least on the M25 where the traffic is start stop it is acceptable to pass on the near side but I used to travel up the M1 and what really used to annoy me was people having only been up for 30 minutes or so and falling into a day dream in the outside lane doing 60mph but it wouldn't be just the one, it would be one after the other after the other as none of them have realised the car infront has slowed down gradually and so have they so they all just sit there merrily doing silly mph with no concerns about moving over
