Default Fitted my K&N panel filter

Received it with my other stuff last week but haven't had a chance to fit it because of the crappy weather we've been having, first of all I had to remove my old airbox as some tool who owned the car before me did this...

As you can see the bottom part of the airbox has been chopped away, presumably to allow more airflow but all it's really doing is allowing all the warm air circulating in the engine bay to be sucked in as well mucking up the filter twice as fast, as you can see in the pic, and after all that he still hasn't de-restricted it

Anyway, that was out with the old, now mine's a 3.2, I bought a 1.8 airbox from Micky (armoured farmer) as I found out that the bases were the same and only the lids that varied, received the 1.8 airbox very promptly after paying (cheers mate!) here are the two airboxes side by side so you can see the difference, the 1.8 box on the left & my 3.2 one on the right...

So I nicked the unmolested bottom section of the 1.8 airbox and combined it with the upper section from my 3.2 airbox to create a nice new airbox,

the upper section from the 1.8 wasn't needed, neither was the cut up lower section from my 3.2 box so they were promptly binned in the skip I have so conveniently in my front garden atm

I decided that as I had everything I needed ready I might aswell de-restrict my new airbox

    Before:

    After:

Now the lower section of the 1.8 box was quite dirty inside so I decided to clean it up, off into the back garden where I had the pressure washer setup, a quick blast with that followed by a drying session on the washing line and it was looking like new

Popped in the K&N, screwed the upper section back on and back into the engine bay it went

First immpressions are the car feels smoother when accelerating, seem to get just a little more induction noise too, hard to tell with that V6 grunt though

Anyway, overall, I'm pleased with the results and much happier now I know my car has a nice new airbox and filter rather than the mess that was previously there!

Also, whilst reading the A4 sheet of paper you get with the filter I noticed if you went online to register with them you get a free decal so done that too

Might be ****, but it's free

Fitted the K and N Cone to mine and its been excellent. No issues what so ever. I know people mention the hot air pick up from around the engine but this is only going to happen when stationary. When you are going full pelt there is no hot air as its all being blown away! Its all cool air coming in from the front so wheres the problems? Cone would be even better, but thats my view.

Wasn't having a dig at cone filters mate, was just the butchered airbox that I was replacing,

TBH I don't think a cone filter would be beneficial in my 3.2, the engine bay is pretty tight as it is, you have all the heat from that in a very small space,

the noise you get from a cone filter is simply awesome but a smoother running car and better HP gains are more important to me, I can only speak from previous experience,

I was running a cone filter on my 1.8 Astra G, my mate with an identical engine with similar mileage and stardard of upkeep ran a de-restricted airbox with k&n panel filter, went to the RR on the same day one after the other on the rollers and he had gained 3BHP over standard where as I had lost power + there must be a common reason why people favour a de-restricted box & panel filter over an exposed cone

    nice job there kev.
i know what you mean about the crud that builds up in the bottom of the air box mine was full so i got the hoover out and give it a quick once over, i am still getting stick from the neighbours about that one ( he can't be bothered to hoover the inside of his car let alone anything else). thik i might run a cold air feed pipe to my box as my next mod and see wot that can do.

That airbox mod you discovered is probably one of Nutrons early efforts
