    Default Buying Advice - 2.0DTi

A good friend of mine is thinking of buying a 2.0DTi just for flying back and forward to work in. I know, i have told him not to get one, go for a 1.9CDTi, but its cheap, about £3500 for a 53 plate one with 88k on the clock.

What should he look out for??

I know i have a 2.2DTi, which is essentially the same engine, but am not fully aware what to look for when buying one.

    Any help gratefully recieved.

EDIT: Sorry, its £3750 - See Here

Bad starting when cold - Spill pipes/Inj Seals
Inj leaks - black gunge at the front of engine, need to remove cover to see
Black/blue smoke from exhaust, can be just a dirty system, but can indicate other problems
Chain rattle - Anything other than the normal derv engine knocks, you'll hear it on the left hand side of the engine
Gearbox noise - pedal in and out and hear if you get a noise intermit, can be thrust bearing, but can also be shaft bearings
Aircon - normally lack of gas tbh
Very poor acceleration, mass air meter, doesn't always throw the light on

Just nad a quick look at the engine photo, the coolant is overfilled and doesn't look to clean tbh.

it looks ok, but as VV said that coolant doesn't look that clever, need to find out what work has been done on it in the past, and as company owned it should have a good service history.....

Looking at the dipstick and oil cap it's had regular level checks as well, which could indicate it's an oil slurper, and any good mechanic wouldn't leave that muck all over the oil cap tbh, personally on 1st sight I wouldn't touch it, it's not properly maintained, and I suspect it's going to be trouble.

The engine in my motor looks worse, but it's a solid runner, just gets bogging dirty from close motorway combat.

But, as said the coolant looks a bit wonky. Best way on those engines to judge how well it's been maintained is lift the oil cap - you'll be able to see the cam and the lifters. If the cam is worn, or the lifters are full of black **** it means the oil was left too long. 20k intervals on the 2.0DTi is suicide in my opinion. Mine's had oil changes every 6 months which is 6-8k with good quality oil. The cams are barely marked, and the inside of the engine is clean as a whistle despite 57k of hard driving.

I've done 105,000 in mine and it drives as sweet as a nut, doesn't use a drop of oil either.

My old one used more oil than any other car I have ever known. They are a touch slow in urban situations but do well on a motorway.

Personally I found it ok if you used it for the long hauls, but hated it for short runs. If kept under 70 you could see high 500s to a tank, if you drove it over 80 you may aswell have thrown pounds coins out the windows!

I had the 2.0 DTi in my old 51 Reg Vec B and it was really good. I got over 600 miles to the tank without really trying very hard. Didn't use any oil either.

One watch out is that the oil takes quite a while to drain back to the sump, so don't check the oil level soon after using it as you will get an incorrect low reading.

Oil and grime on the cap shouldn't be a reason to condemn the whole car VV ! Mine's filthy, but has been serviced totally correctly.

Sloppy maintenance ain't my gig Ste, you won't find last yrs top up all over my cover, and the oil staining on the cap and stick imo shows careless ownership and a car dealer who hasn't heard about 1st impressions, add the header tank, wrong level and mucky, at a guess I'd say this baby's got some compression issues going on and could be blowing by and in to the waterways tbh.

If I could hear it see it and smell it I'd have a better idea, but as I can't I think BM's mate should be aware of these simple pick up points, could still be a goodum as you say Ste, but for my money it's a well thrashed potentially clocked effort.
