    Does anyone know what the white stick thing is in the petrol cap please?

    I assume you mean on the flap? if so it's to remove the valve caps without getting your hands dirty.

    It's not useless.

    Break off the 'tang' at the end and it is the perfect size to fit between the trigger and the guard on the petrol pump dispenser. Makes it 'handsfree' so you don't have to hold the trigger and get cramp? in your hands. Or you can just be lazy
