Default Newbie - couple of queries

Hi - I'm new to the site and have been trying to find out as much info on my new vectra (2004 - sri 2lt turbo petrol) as possible.

I purchased it from a local "car supermarket" on Monday and have noticed that it has quite a loud knocking when i am turning right at pretty low speeds.

Also if I try to conserve a bit of fuel and leave it in 4th/5th gear and have the rev's about 1100-1500 I get a vibration/grinding noise.

Any ideas on what these can be as I only have a 30 day/1000 mile warranty with them and want to get it back in with them and at least be able to sound like i know what i'm talking about.

Thanks in advance and great site
    Mark

Spring / shocks / anti roll bar bushes for the knocks - theres plenty on this site about it.
As for vibration / grinding noise you are in tooooo high a gear for the rev's.

    P.S. Welcome to the site!

    Default Thanks

Thanks for the update and quick reply - i have been reading through the posts after i had posted mine. Think I'm going to give them a call and see how good they at at aftersales warranty calls.

Also you're right about the too high a gear for the rev's my last car was a Fiat Multipla diesel and I used to cruise around at about 1200rpm and got about 48mpg. It's a bit of a culture shock coming down to approximately 27mpg with the vec. Then again I didnt buy the turbo to be concerned about fuel consumption

I love the car and cant believe i didnt check them out before!

    Default update and query

I'm hoping to get some pics on later next week.

Just a quick update and two quick queries. I've had my car back at the place I bought it from (car supermarket in derbyshire) and they have replaced one of the shock absorbers on the front.

Firstly query is can they only replace one shock as I thought they had to be done in pairs? The car is not knocking at all and is a dream going over speed humps and pot holes now - before it was a nightmare.

Secondly the garage also noticed that the brakes were juddering (I hadnt noticed it) so they also replaced the disks on the front.

I've done about 300 miles in the car since I got it back and have been taking it easy. I've noticed today though that when braking at slow speeds (under 25mph) I got a loud sort of fog horn sound for no more than a second. After about this happening a dozen times I now am getting a low sound squeal from the brakes again only when i brake lightly at low speed.

Can anyone tell me if this is normal or should i be looking out for something and getting it back?

    Thanks in advance - Mark

Shocks can be replaced one at a time although it's not very good practice - car may sit at different heights plus if one was knackered the other won't be that far behind

Have they copper slipped the brakes? Have they replaced both the front? and not just one side. The shocks should be replaced in pairs. They come in pairs, so to replace only one is a bit sus I guess they may have had one lying around and done that maybe?
They sound a bit dodgy in my opinion.
I'm sure some one on here will come along with a more technical description of the faults.

In the mean time. A VX garage will do an inspection for you for around £30.00. And let you know of any problems. You'll get that money back too, if you get the work done there. At least around here you do.

    Hope you get it sorted.

Shocks are sold singly, BUT MUST BE FITTED in pairs.. standard workshop procedures..it sounds like they have just tried to shave a few quid on the job..and as for the brakes it does sound like the pads have been fitted dry.. they should have had a smear of copper grease fitted wherever they contact the caliper and caliper carrier.. yet again old school workshop practice mate....and if they changed the discs, did they swap the pads as well??..they should have..

I'm giving them a call later to get soem details over what they have actually carried out and will get them to sort it again. To be honest I was pretty impressed with them when they took the car and said they were repairing it no question asked - I can understand now when they are doing the repairs as cheaply as possible. I am fairly confident they only changed the discs and not the pads. I'm not so confident they have even changed discs on both sides as one still looks a bit used to me. I'll let you know how i get on.
