Default Full Set of Chrome Wheel bolts.

Following on from HERE I disn't like the locking bolt looking the odd one out.

Following some advise on from a member, I popped up to Demon Tweaks in Wrexham who Stocks Mcgard Wheel bolts. I bought some Mcgard Tuner bolts (M12x1.5x24mm) but my caps were way to big. So DT opened up a few packets until we found a close match. I took em out to the car amd tried to tap the 17mm cover on but they wouldn't budge. HTe bolts doo look nice though!

So I went to Halfords again and bought a pack of 19mm covers. Job done.

    Before:

    Just 17mm covers fitted:

The VX locking Bolt , The Mcgards, Plain wheel bolt.

Thanks for the PM Brocks and subsequent exchange. Having also got the chrome covers like you, I was told by a member that 17mm covers would fit over the McGard bolts so I went and ordered some. Bizarre coincidence that they rang to say they were in just before I got your PM! lol

I went for the Ultra (SL) ones which I now know won't take even the 19mm caps!, , so I'll have to get the Standard ones. Puzzled by the different number on your pack. In the Halfords booklet it gave 27204 as being the one for the Signum/Vectra C. They're also M12 x 1.5mm - maybe just a different bolt length?

I went for the Ultra ones as I thought the Standard ones were too easy to remove(?) as they don't have the rotating collar so could more easily be ripped off by a simple means. Not sure.

Now not sure what to do! lol

Do I get the Standard ones, which are 'maybe' less secure and have the nice finish of the chromed cap, or get the McGard Ultra ones which are more secure and have no cap. At least being chromed they'll look better than the Vx one.

    Hmmmmm

We looked for a M12 bolt with 1.5 pitch and approx the right length. We didn't necassarily use a book once we knew the pitch and diameter. MCgards do three ranges. Ultra Standard and Tuner. The Tuner has a longer head and may not need a cap at all.

The Ultras look just like the VX ones in size and shape. How well the chrome will last I don't know.

The Key on mine has to be exactly in the right place to work. I hadn't thought of ripping socket I must admit. However You need the tool to get the cap off before you can rip into the bolt.

Sorry D. Its your choice now.

How do you get these covers off the bolt without scratching them ??

The Vauxhall ones fit soooo tight !!

Right, after a bit of researching I'm still not sure what to do!!

I was going to get a set of these but I think all they are are a narrower set of the standard ones for wheels that have smaller bolt holes. They don't look like they have the rotating collar of the Ultra ones or the Vx ones I have. I'm just not keen on the non-rotating collar ones as it looks too easy for them to be ripped off after simply pulling off the chrome cover with a set of pliers.

I can't see the point in getting the Ultra ones as the chrome cap won't fit, and looking closer at the pics they look exactly the same as the Vx ones I already have. I'm sure the Vx ones are just repackaged McGards.

Whilst I'd like to have all bolts covered with a chrome cap, I'm not prepared to compromise on security. I like my wheels, and I'm sure there are scrotes out there who would like them too!! I'm not going to make it easier for them to have them away.

Think I'll be keeping things as they are for the moment - unless I'm missing something blatantly obvious and there is a way around it?

BTW Brocks - the bolts you got are 26.4mm length, so only 2.4mm longer than the ones that were listed in the Halfords booklet for our cars - so I can't see it being a problem.

A little maybe but really they are a longer version of the ones I got.

TBH D. the tool you get only just fits between the cap and wheel. Scrotes would need say 8" + long nose pliers and they aint so easy to conceal.

I'd agree there. But if you look at me photos, the VX one has gone all manckey!

I guess that answers my query from Yesterday.
