Default Replacing door mirror/how2/exploded diagram ?

Ages ago I managed to break my door mirror on the gate post it has broken the black plastic section but the rest is ok and it works fine.

The dealer said it's £35 for a mirror body and £100 to fit it, including swopping the internals from the broken on to the new one.

They said the the mirror plugs in half way down the door so the door card has to come off however, I saw a mirror on ebay this week which shows the mirror having a socket on it. It looks like you can plug it in where the mirror meets the door and not have to take off the door card.

So I am considering changing it myself does anyone have any hints or tips ? (I could do a how 2 when I do it) in particular, some sort of exploded diagram so I can swop the internals, motor etc into the new mirror body ?

Cheers guys, I would really appreciate help with this one. The broken mirror makes the car look like a wreck and I think VX have blagged me about the mirror connection.

    TIA
    Si

Which bit exactly is it that's broken? The black bit that basically surrounds the glass? If it is, then that's not a separate part - it's part of the whole housing.

Or were you meaning the rounded cover that faces forwards? Is yours not colour coded, hence it being black? If it's that bit then it's easy to replace.

I've got a whole bunch of pics here from when I changed my mirrors to electric folding, with the intention of doing a How 2 (haven't quite got round to doing it yet!) so can post up different pics of the mirrors in various stages of removal.

That would be great Duncan, it should help point me in the right direction

It's the black part which surrounds the glass, I think VX called it a "mirror body" TBH i didn't think £35 for the part was too bad.

Am I right in thinking that the body coloured parts can be transfered to the new body too ? and does it screw to the door behind the trim that contains the tweeter ?

    Thanks for your help

You're meaning the large black ovel shaped surround shown here....

Assuming you are, I'm a bit puzzled as that part isn't listed separately - just the whole housing (less motors and glass). Also, it's fitted by those plastic 'rivets' that have been melted and squished - if you see what I mean....

If they're quoting you £35 for the whole housing then bite their arm off, somebody has made a mistake in the pricing!! lol Assuming that they can replace this part separately from the whole housing, I can't see any need for them to remove the whole housing as the surround would come off (after drilling the rivets) by simply removing the glass and colour coded cover on the back of the housing to get access. If their reason was so that they weren't working with it on the car, then it's a simple enough job to do. It does make it easier to remove the door card (for the time it takes) as it gives easier access to remove the cover that sits over the Torx screws holding the housing on. The connection plug is also in that same area.

Hope that helps, and I'd be curious to hear more info about replacing just that part. Don't suppose you could get a part number from them?

hey, thanks for that D very very useful.

yes, it is the black surround part which is broken on mine. I'll pop back into the parts counter and pick their brains about it and get a part number.

It is starting to look like something I might have to ask them to do though (or a nearby specialist).

I've just done exactly same thing parking car on garage. Mirror does normally go the opposite way without breaking but this time it's snapped about an inch of mirror and the same area of surround.

I am going to get one from a scrap car and as mine is Saturn blue, I think, hopefully retain the colour coded part and change out the rest. They seem to go for around 30-40 for the lot on the big auction site.
