Default USA Internet Sales & Import Duty / VAT

I'm thinking of buying some Levis 501's from a US website.

    2 pairs for $67.00 + $37.00 Postage

Does anyone have any experience of whether I will get stung for Import duty / VAT charges?

If so, what kind of charge am I looking at?

    Cheers

I have bought heaps of stuff from the states and just been stung once, it was hefty though, probably about $50 on that lot ... It was fedex and I got a bill about 3 weeks later, dunno if they would hound you if you forgot to pay it ??

I do belive that you can bring in or ship in in this case. Goods upto the value of 150 quid. So you should have no problem. As long as you dont buy 50 pair that is. I brought my mate 3pair back the other week from the US. worked out 59 quid for 3. He say's he pay's about 55 quid a pair in the UK.

Just a bit worried that the personal allowance for carry on gifts will not apply to me as an official importer of the goods from USA.

Would hate to get stung for effectively the difference in price from the USA and UK

Any more cheery customs advice out there?

The first thing I bought from the States was a $900 camera lens (at the time that was £600) cost me £150 import was not impressed, I've since managed to avoid in most cases but if you get caught then expect to pay 20-25% in charges (VAT, import & handling costs - the PO charge £8 for paying the charges)

Officially the import duty has to be paid on any import now (where it applies)
The appropriate rate is then paid on receipt
However, due to the volumes the vast majority sneeks through
    Pot luck really

I have NEVER been stung (he says touching wood). Some of the items I have odered have been taking the P!ss a little too
If the jeans are cheap enogh then you won't get stung too bad. When you think its 2 to the pound there are some cracking deals.

The £145 allowance is only on accompanied goods (you have to travel with them). That's why you can't get fags posted to you from Spain and claim that they're your allowance.

Whey hey .... got 3 new pair of Levis 501's delivered today from California and no extra charges.

Grand total (including postage and packaging - super fast from USA) £77.00

About £26 a pair instead of the UK £55
