    Lightbulb Looking for some advice

Having spent time chatting with a certain member with a diesel powered VXR look alike over the weekend (its all his fault!!) I need a little bit of help decision making!

I have a 53 plate 1.8 SXi hatch which is a great car, but I miss having a car that feels quick and chuckable. I've been looking at getting some more poke from the engine and realised that unless I start throwing silly money at it, and even then, I'm not really gonna get very good results in terms of extra power. Also I seriously object to the amount of road tax I have to pay for an 1800 and although its not bad, the fuel consumption isn't all it could be.

I'm left with a problem. I got the car cheap enough not to loose more than a few hundred quid on it if I sell it in the next few months. Do I continue to throw money at the car to improve the looks but ultimately not the performance, or do I sell it and search out a reasonable CDTi.

    Any thoughts?

The later mate. If your not going to loose too much on it I'd sell and buy a decent CDTi. If you can stretch to it go for the V6 CDTi as IMO you don't have to try and get any extra horses out of them as they're fast enough.

i agree with Alex. ultimately you will not get any money back when you come to sell your existing car if you choose to modify the looks of it, so you may aswell put that money towards getting a diesel. whether it be a 1.9 150 with a remap or a V6 in standard or modified guise.

    i'd advise a V6 with a map

Harry, does your v6 have the remap and if so how much more bhp is there from standard, whats the driveability like etc. The only worry I have with a V6 is that the tax and fuel costs aren't gonna be that different are they?

edit: Just seen your comments on the other thread on this subject!

the remap upped the bhp from 177 to 226....and 190bhp was at the wheels. the torque was up to around 450Nm if i remember correctly.

nothing detrimental to say about the driveability at all, the car in standard form is no slouch, but with the remap the car just came alive, completely effortless driving whether it be around town or on the motorways.

tax this year for the v6 is around 300 quid, and fuel-wise you'll always see 450 to the tank.

what with fuel and diesel prices being the same (they are round here at least) it's never made more sense to buy a diesel.

As said, deffo go for the right engine as a baseline. You can easily/cheaply tune it after that if you want.
The V6 isnt bad at all on fuel and will be better than your 1.8, I'd have said. The V6 does also have bigger brakes (314mm - same as GSi) so stops very well. However you'll lose out on handling slightly against the 1.9 as its heavier. But its still not too bad.

It all sounded very good til you mentioned £300 a year road tax

The other thread seems to say that 1.9 and 3.0 arent that different in terms of power just in terms of delivery, so paying almost double the road tax seems a bit daft, and I hate paying roadtax at the best of times!!

there are arguments both for and against though. statistically the V6 is the stronger engine in terms of build, but you can't discount that 1000's more 1.9's are sold over 3.0's and that means more problems have come to light.

the power delivery is very different, the v6 is a very refined sort of acceleration, there is not a massive kick in the back when you floor it, just a constant pull. the 1.9 gives the kick in the back.

the only way you are going to distinguish between which one you want is to drive them both in standard guise, which i'm sure you will be happy with the performance. and then consider upping the power later on if you want

The road tax depends on what year you buy. My 3.0 is £205 a year at the mo. The 1.9 is cheaper at something like £150...
Wasn't march 26th 2007 the cutoff for the £300/£400 a year tax bracket? And does the V6 diesel fall into this?
Now I need a turbo to keep up!

I didn't think the 3.0V6 fell into the highest category? Matt (Maverick) posted up a post in another thread a while back with all the details if you do a search for it and I'm sure the 3.0V6 (either pre or facelift) didn't fall into the highest category.
