I don't think is does come on with the ignition.
You have to push the brake pedal while driving first. Then it shoulod come on with the buttons on the stalk. If it doesn't try it while lifting the clutch pedal with your toe. Sometimes the spring on the pedal breaks and may need replacing.
    oh and
Now I need a turbo to keep up!

You don't need to have pressed the brake pedal once for CC to work. Well at least I just have to when I just tested it.

I have to on mine. If I drive off and try the CC it won't engage until I have used the brakes at least once.

I've never seen a check light on mine when i turn the ignition on. But as above, with mine i have to brake at least once while driving before the CC will engage.

cheers guys, i had a look underneath behind the clutch pedal but the spring seems fine. there doesnt seem to be any play in the spring and i cant pull the cluth pedal forward, according to the drivers manual a symbol like the top one on the cruise stalk should light up when ignition is turned on.
