Books for 'newbies'

Ok all, I consider myself a competant modder in that I can follow instructions and am good at diy jobs etc & I'm facinated with engines but I need some help...

I might sound like a complete numpty but I'm looking for a book (or two) that can tell me:

1. How a gearbox works - what the key parts are etc.
2. How an engine works - again key parts and pref. V6

I'm more into the mechanical elements than the electrical ones (as I think i can upgrade mechanical ones more easily!) and really want a gentle and general introduction rather than a scarily detailed manual.

Any recco's would be greatfully received!
