    Default The slippery camera slope....

After much umming and ahh-ing I finally bought my Canon 400d a few weeks ago, and I'm dead chuffed with it. Trouble is, as it's so many years since i had an SLR, I'd forgotten what a slippery slope the whole business is.
I've now come to agree with the punters, and see that the 18-55 kit lense that comes with the camera isn't the best, so I'm looking at the 17-85 IS to replace that. I work with someone who's a semi-pro, and he's lent me his 25-105 IS "L" series lense, and it's a cracker. I especially like the image stabilizer.
So, now I'm thinking that I could replace my ancient 70-300 zoom that a friend gave me with an IS lense.........

This is going to be pricey. I think I need a second job!

Lol! I know what you mean - I've not used mine recently but when I was I was constantly looking through websites and eBay for new equipment that was way out of my reach!

I too want an IS lens...I really do...

I went down the same route. The standard Cannon lense is rubbish !!

I got the Sigma Gold series lense which does have 3 lens elements which are low dispersion, not as much as the canon which has much more low dispersion glass. However, the Sigma is much less cost and quite good quality.

Its not as fantastic as the Canon 'L' series (red stripe) lenses but they are megga money

lol - 'tis a slippery slop! I'm fully accustomed to the cost of all the kit, both digital and non-digital, with it, as you know, being my profession. It's frightening when I tot up the cost of all the different equipment I have!!

I'm sure you'll be happy with 400D, I've heard lots of good things about it. I assume you meant the 24-105 lens above? That's the lens I got with my 5D and it is a nice lens. It's the lens that stays on the camera most of the time as it's a nice focal range. I only need to switch to the 70-200 on occasions. The IS is definitely nice to have, especially on the 70-200 as it has the two modes of IS. You can set it so that it only works in the vertical plane so that you can still pan without the IS having a fit and messing up a shot! lol

Yep, the camera's nice, but the kit lense really lets it down. the 24-105 is a lovely bit of kit, but weighs almost as much as the camera, and I probably don't need it. On the 5D, it must be fantastic. My ex-boss has one, and he raves about it -especially in low light conditions.
In fact, here's one of his pictures..... http://www.bbc.co.uk/wales/northeast...s/airbus.shtml

Yep, Compact Flash cards come in different speeds i.e. the speed at which they can be written too. I'm not sure what the spec of the 400D is i.e. whether there's a point at which there's no point buying a faster card as the camera wouldn't take advantage of it. I'll have a shufty to see.

I happened to mention in the office that I was looking at the 17-85 Efs lense, and one my colleagues had one to sell!
One wad of cash later, and I'm the proud owner.........
