    Default Serious problem with auto box

    Hi guys,

    Following on from my earlier engine management light prob, I went back to the dealer at lunch, and he said they couldn't look at it today as they were too busy. On the way back home, the automatic gearbox kept selecting 5th at the most inappropriate times (18mph up a 45 degree hill), and the same with 2nd gear (cruising at 50mph). It's bunny-hopping all over the place, and the automatic gearbox generally doesn't sound or feel like it knows what it's doing at all.

    The engine management light came on again on the way up to the dealer and the oil light is on too now. I've not even had the thing for 24 hours yet! Anyone got any ideas as to what this could be and how I can get it sorted?

    i would take it back and ask for either a different car or reject it under the sale of goods act.....unsuitable for the purpose for which it was sold ..... straight away, as it seems as if it could be a bit of a lemon and you'll never be totally happy with it or have any confindence in it.

    just my thoughts.........

    Nah, don't wanna be doing that. It's a second-hand jobby, and they haven't got another car on their forecourt that could touch it (2.2 Elegance). I'd been looking for over a year before I found this one, so I don't want to go taking it back.

    The guy said that their valeters had steam-cleaned the entire engine bay, including the sodding electronic sensors. How can I 'de-steam' them and reset the computer to stop it going ape****?

    just had a look on the auto trader website at least 3 low mileage ones all under £4.5k
    give it some serious thought......... did the last owner sell it cos of these sort of problems?

    sorry for seeming to try to put a downer on your new car, just dont want you to have a really bad experience with your new toy

    Could someone please post a picture of the gearbox oil light and the engine management light (or describe both) for the Vectra C?

    No, it came from a garage. It was MOT'd and serviced 48 hours ago!!

    That's the one! 'Only 2nd and 5th gear can be selected'. The garage have fobbed me off and said they are too busy at the moment. It's under warranty with them, so I don't want to take it anywhere else and have to pay for it

    Anyone got any ideas? It's an intermittent fault.
