Default Help with changing my car please

My first post so a big hello to everyone

I currently have a Vectra B 2001, Club DTI , ive had it 4 years and had no problems with it , now ive got children i want a safer car (the seatbelts on the Vec B arnt very good for child seats) and the Vec C is the obvious choice

    Ive seen a SRI 2.2 Direct 04 , 37k for £6700 , and been offered 2k for mine.

The only concern is the fuel economy , not sure what im getting now i guess around 45 on average, dont do many miles at all just a play school trip every day (2 miles) and shopping at the weekend.

I would like a Diesel but the cdti's are way out of my price range.

Anyway sorry for the waffling , does this seem like a good buy and what sort or MPG would i expect , ive seen the figures on the VX site but i know they are optimistic

    Thanks

    Deano

If you look around you will find a few CDTi's for under 7k now m8. I had a quick look earlier on Autotrader and found 61 CDTi's for under 7k. Some started at 5k but had a few miles on them. Best was a 150 Design on an '04 plate for 6.5k with under 50k miles

EDIT: just had a quick nosey before going to bed. found THIS Not a bad price

Thanks for that, i really want to get something sporty like a Sri or SXI which i beleive is bascially the same car (but cheaper), and ive only got 5k plus trade in , most garages are offering peanuts for mine.

There isnt much choice near me

The 2.2 direct I had as a CCar only did about 27mpg max. Cost me a fortune in the week I had it. My 3.0V6 CDTi is far cheaper to run hought about one of those????
Now I need a turbo to keep up!

You seem to do very little mileage, why do you want a diesel?? The initial extra outlay will never be re-couped by reduced fuel usage (which is the main reason why people buy diesel - right?). So why worry about fuel consumption when the actual difference between any engine would be peanuts.

In fact if you're only doing that extremely low mileage, why have a car at all??? Would it not be cheaper to use public transport / taxis??? When you have paid for the car, tax, insurance, repairs, depreciation????

I would sit down and work through the numbers and I bet you will be surprised.

A friend of mine and his girlfriend bought a car for her once. She did very little mileage, one day we sat down and worked through how much it was costing, and it worked out to be about three times as expensive as her getting taxis everywhere, and that didn't even include her parking bills aswell.

I have a 2.2 Direct Sri and average about 35mpg. It's a cheap enough car to insure, road tax and run. Much cheaper than my old car was.

I used to have a 2.0DTi Vec B estate, averaged 46mpg and I do about 15k a year (I use mine mainly for work). When it came to change I weighed up the pros and cons of getting another diesel against a petrol but worked out that with the purchase price difference at the time between a diesel estate and a petrol estate and associated costs I would need to do 24k per year to break even (I was looking at year old cars).

Therefore I went for a 1.8 petrol and I find that I'm averaging 35mpg, and to be honest I've not really noticed the difference at the end of the month (strange but true).

Therefore I wouldn't discount a petrol - I do miss the DTi (mainly the torque and laziness of it to drive) but I couldn't really justify the costs. I'd concentrate more on the cost to change than the mpg for your mileage.

If the car's a good one and the cost to change works out it doesn't look bad.

Hope this helps. (Whats the mileage on your DTi?)

At 7K a year, diesel would not be cost effective as you would NEVER recoup the initial extra outlay. BUT horses for courses.
