    Angry Direct Line and Youngsters!!

Be warned if you're under 25 and want to mod your car and you're under 25!!!

As you're aware the insurance companies will get out of any claim if they can for whatever reason. My 19 year old lad came home in his 1.0 12v Corsa with Lexus rear lights on. He paid £1700 for his 1st years insurance so I told him just to make sure and tell the insurance. we've just received today a letter saying that "because he's under 25 Direct line will not accept any modifications"!!!

Now I'm no fan of these Lexus lights but what harm do they do? Will they speed him up? And we all wonder why we don't tell the insurance why we mod cars????

Be warned if you're young and at Directline!!!!

So they are clearly telling you their expectations and limitations. So where is the confusion? and why do you appear to be aggrieved???

I just think they are being very clear of their opinions of mods and under 25's that's all. If you don't like it, then go elsewhere for insurance.

It's also not just about speeding the car up, mods make cars more individual therefore more desirable to theives

What difference does it make if the bloke who Mod's the car is 19, or 59. Its still the same car, with the same mod'd on it, and regardless of who owns it, it will still appeal to potential thieves the same either way.

If Direct Line had a 0% tolerance across the borad on modded car's, then i would agree with their point of view, but from the way the letter is written, it seems to be singling out under 25's.

Bigger companies like Direct Line/Swinton etc would much rather have all their clients falling into the Over 40 Low Risk Catergory, they dont want to deal with youngster's and their Modded Saxo's, and when they do, they charge an extortionate amount of money for it!

I am sure there is a direct corellation between youngsters and modified (whatever mods there are) cars and the number of accidents/claims. It may seem wrong to say that any youngster who modifies their car in whatever shape or form is more likely to make a claim but I bet that it is a fact and Direct Line will want to mitigate their risk to ensure that they can offer more competitive prices to us oldies.
I am just in the process of getting an additional quote from Direct Line to insure my wife for her first car (she has a provisional licence and in her 30's) and they will not insure anything more than a 1.2 Corsa or similar - they won't even add her as a named driver on my Vectra).

Exactly, it is all about risk. Not a personal risk for a categorised, general assessment of risk based on certain criteria.

I`m goin to play devils advocate here but when you see the way alot of the Saxo/Corsa driving youngsteers drive there`s no wonder they single them out.Not saying all of them do but the majority it has to be said.

A few years ago I sold my old ford sierra to my mum. I had to have a cat 2 immobliser fitted. She didn't! same car, same address. The reason I was given? Because i'm more likely to leave it in a dodgy place!
Now I need a turbo to keep up!

At the end of the day its 1.0 why doesnt he wait till hes got something with a bit more performance and mod that, i dont see the point in spending lots of cash on a corsa.

Sorry im actually being a bit of a hypocrite as I remember what i was like when i got my mk3 astra, £800 alloys, back box and induction kit, you heard long before you seen.

I would try some different insurance companies myself £1700 seems a bit steep.
