confused Auto v Manual gearbox replacement cost

Other members posts have got me thinking:
Am I right in thinking that an auto box has more problems than a manual and that it costs £4,000 to replace as against £1,000 for a manual?
In that case should I allow for the extra expense if intending to keep an auto vectra for 6 years, (90,000 miles)?
Also is it more work but easier to control a manual - I mean does the auto become jerky after a few years and is it difficult to tell when its about to shift gear?
I would like an auto but not sure whether it would be a good move cost and control wise, should I go for it?

if the auto box geos south it's normally because the oil/water cooler has got a failed gasket in it, and yes, it will cost a bomb..wheras the manuals are slightly more rugged and any that had problems are normally fixed by now..it's only the earlier cars ( up to 04) that had the dodgy sealed radiator, after that they fitted modified parts to the cars..

If you are really worried about the seal failing, then for around £150 you can fit a seperate oil cooler using the connections for the standard one, and it will remove any possibility of this happening.

My auto is still as smooth as silk after around 40K miles, i service the gearbox every 20K anyway as they love fresh fluid and it took my previous AF autobox to over 200K trouble free miles..but as ever, the choice is yours, and bear in mind that if a manual car has a dual mass flywheel, then should you need a clutch you'll need to buy one of those as well and a clutch change is around £500 on these cars without the flywheel..and yes the flywheels do fail, like all modern cars with DMF's..

    Yeah, thanks for the advice.
It's a bit ominous that I haven't had any other answers to my question so I'll play safe and stick with manual.
