Sounds like the clutch is worn out. Hence its slipping.
Now I need a turbo to keep up!

It's slipping then? as you accelerate the engine revs without speed going up by much, I notice it's a 1.8 so it could be the engine struggling against the sheer weight of the car, my 2.0DTi did it a few times when I had it loaded up, anyway before you plump for a new clutch it could be something on the hydraulic side of the clutch leaking, this will also give you this sort of problem, you need to PM Mark GSi for an accurate what to look for on this because I'm not 100% on where fluid goes into it or if its a sealed system, it it's done 80k+ there is a good chance the clutch is worn out, especially if it's been owned by someone who sits balancing it at the lights etc, have you had a look at the brakes yet? when I say snip the wire I mean the old one btw, it's up to you if you want to pay for a new sensor wire or not, but this method re-connects the circuit and puts the dash light out, if it's an ABS light then you are talking big money and I'd suggest looking for aftermarket parts rather than Vx ones, lemme know what you find, ABS is a single small light on the dash, if it's coming up on the MFD then it should just be the sensor sending a signal to say the pads are shot.

If it's only doing it when you gun it, probably 10-30k, if it's doing it all the time it will probably still last a while but be annoying, what you need to watch out for is that the flywheel isn't shot as well because that will bump the cost up, but it could still be fluid contamination causing it, still need a new clutch though even if it is that, best way to look at it is this, if it doesn't have any more stuff that needs doing and it runs ok, spend a £1000 getting it all up together, and run it for the next few yrs.
