    Default Not your average oil question

    I have read the info on oil in one of the sections on here.

    One question is, what is the difference between oil for diesel and petrol engines?

    I have got a load of oil, with API CI4, CH4, CG4/SL on it, and wonder whether it will be OK for petrol cars? Maybe older petrol cars? or not at all.

    It also has ACEA E7/E5/E3 on it? What does this mean??

    Anyone know ???

    Cheers and thanks in advance

    Not sure with the rating Ste, but if it's proper Diesel oil it will have added detergent's in it, so I personally wouldn't use it in a petrol engine, although thinking about it there shouldn't be any reason why not to, after all some diesel engine's started out life as petrol engines, but you don't really see diesel oil on the shelf these days, so perhaps the fact it acts as a mild flusher may have caused early failures. hth.

    I'm no expert on oils at all, but this webpage seems pretty thorough: -
    http://www.carbibles.com/engineoil_bible.html
    There's a section about oil classification, and it may answer some of your queries,
    In one part it says that "API CI4 can be used in place of API CD, CE, CF-4....." which is also diesel oil, so it looks like it is not suitable for any spark ignition engines, which have the prefix "S".

    No problem .... CG4/SL indicates its made for both diesel/petrol - cars.
    Many oils today can be used in both.

    C = Diesel
    S = Petrol
