Default Any building regs experts out there?

I know it's not about cars but thought I'd ask. My neighbour has just built a new window into a ground floor wall which overlooks the front of our property. I am wondering if she needs to have had planning permission so wonder if there is any experts out there that could answer my query?

I think so, across the road did this to open up the landing in his house, I must admit I wasn't consulted on it, but as he's a good bloke and it doesn't bother me I've never chased it up.

your best bet would be to contact your local council to see if there is a plan for the works and they could tell you if your worried about your priversy

Hi m8, I'm no expert, but have been looking in to an extension very soon, you need planning permission for 90% of work, and pretty much everything needs to conform to Building Reg,

Sign yourself up to the planning Portal HERE it will give you a lot of advice, also go on to your local council web site, you'll be able to look over ALL planning permission requests for your road , you'll be able to check if they have asked for permission,

    Hope it helps a little

If the wall is on the boundary, then they would not be allowed to insert a window into it as it would be a path for fire.

If the wall is back from the boundary then you can have windows in walls (from a fire point of view) but it does open up the issue of overlooking.

    A few thoughts: -

A window at ground floor level can always be responded to with some creative fencing solution on the boundary

A window at first floor would probably trigger a planning application due to overlooking.

Is your front garden overlooked from the street, or from other windows in the front of their house, in which case a window in a neighbouring property would probably not be regarded as an issue by the planners.

Give the local planners a call and talk through your concerns with them.

Yes you do need a type of planning application/certificate as all installations have to be carried out by someone FENSA registered, so you have all the relevant paperwork should you sell the house. i am a window fitter but work for a local company and therefore are covered by their annual FENSA certificate. i would recommend you contact your local council to put your mind at rest though, hope this helps.

the groundfloor extention on our property originally had a round window put into the side that was the boundry with the neighbours side-front garden. They objected and the window had to be filled in.So in your case i would of thought they would of needed planning permission,or at least you were given notice so that you could object....HTH

I think you'll find it needs permision from the local building control dept.. It comes under parts L and M of the building regs and it would therefore be notifiable to the local councils building control dept and would need to be installed by a fensa registered installer or your neighbour would have to comply to certain things..

Please be aware, if you don't really dislike your neighbour I wouldn't complain, things like this have a habit of creating MASSIVE neighbourly disputes.... (experience talking here)
