    Default 06 1.8VVT Design - pre-purchase questions.

Went to look at one of these this evening, it's in Silver Lightning (a colour I've had before and really like).

Drives well, with only 16k on the clock, hasn't been abused as the original Bridgestones are on the front and still have a heap of tread). Looks like a new car pretty much.

They're looking £10495 for it, it's on an 06 plate. Seems reasonable price considering they're selling same age SRis with half the equipment for the same price.

Is there a way to check that it is a VVT?

Finally, the suspension is a tad wibbly-wobbly compared to my 55mm lowered Astra, but that's not a bad thing. I assume 1.8SRi springs will go straight in?

Any particular reason why you want a 1.8? If its a petrol you want why not go for a 2.2 Direct? The 1.8 is no more ecomical and the 2.2 Direct will have loads more poke.

    I paid £10995 for a brand new 07 plate 1.8 vvt exclusiv.

I find that the bridgestone tyre are VERY noisy and am seriously thinking about changing them.

Also the suspension is pretty poor.Vauxhall are quoted as saying they have tweaked the suspension on the new models and will use it on future models.I hope not cos its cr8p.Wallows and bangs into all the bumps.I also find the 1.8 vvt a bit gutless unless you rev it hard and then its noisy. If you take the car your looking at out again listen to the engine and also the tyres.

    Personally i wouldn't recommend buying a 1.8 vvt

i agree, the engine is a bit noisy and and may seem a little less pokey than other specs etc, but I am happy with mine. Push for a drop in price. I ended up with a design sat nav 06 with 14k for 9.3k a few months ago. Not from vx but they were only a few hundred away (it was availibility in silver lighting that was the decider in the end). My advice would be if you are looking for a vehicle for a few years before chopping in then the 1.8 is for your (if price is important as well). As a long term car, I would be looking for something a bit more powerful and probalby a diesel 1.9 120 or 150(I will be in a couple of years). Posted From a long term Ford owner, now a convert!

tend to be a bit scrappy from here but an indicator none the less, have seen mileages +_ 2-3k

    apologies for the long link

Well, the reason I'm not going for a 2.2Direct is....there isn't a single one for sale in Northern Ireland, and there's none in NetworkQ central stock. Here in N. Ireland we've only really got 4 dealerships, so choice is a little limited. No car supermarkets here either, and I'm not prepared to travel to the mainland for a Vectra.

The 1.8 I drove went OK, maybe not as quick off the line as my 2.0DTi Astra due to the torque, but still usable. I used to have a 1.6 8v Astra, and a 1.2 Corsa, and now the diesel Astra, so rapid vehicles aren't something I'm used to...

Plus I rarely keep my cars for long - this Astra is the longest I've had a car at just under 2 years. 18 months normally is the average, old company car habits die hard.

That's pretty much identical to the one I'm looking at, but price is a grand higher which is about right over here.

sorry didn't pick up on your location. Been over on a few business trips and prices are different in your neck of the woods.

For a big car and a good spec the 1.8vvt design is not a bad buy imho.

Still unsure how happy I am to keep hold of the car after the vx warranty runs out though.

i think the car is a bargain mate and its got a very good spec, certainly better equipped than sri, bung some decent suspension on it and bigger wheels and it will look and handle superb, TBH ive seen the same model over here in scotland and ive seen them as low as 9k but id rather pay slightly more and get a better condition car, the one youre buying sounds very tidy and i for one look1 forward to seeing the pics! its the law round here lol

No problems jordy - also be aware insurance prices are double here too compared to the mainland. I'm 31, and am paying £400 for the insurance

Well this'll be my 4th Vauxhall, and touch wood I've not had to get anything done to any of them apart from normal wear and tear things like brakes, joints, etc.

pogo, it's a good looking car, only a slight mark on the front wing and one alloy is kerbed, but they're going to refurb that wheel and sort of the scuff. Inside it doesn't look like anyone's sat in the back, ever - and the front is unmarked too.

The salesman is giving me a good price for my motor too - I thought I'd get a **** price as it's lowered quite agressively and has a huge Powerflow exhaust on it. Glad I got a young salesman and not the old fella.

I think a set of 5-spoke Pentas off an Astra SRi would look sweet.
