with diesel engines getting better, what are the new automatics like to drive i`m thinking of ones with tiptronic, the last auto i drove was a 3 speed 5ltr mustang that snapped ya neck as it changed gear & the kick down put ya in the back seats

we've got a 150 auto in the family and it's quite a nice drive....6 speeds and tiptronic and much much better than early boxes..
I love my 5 speed auto......you get exactly that, a pain in the neck after going down gears....really sweet pain I might add
As Mark said, I had a 1.9 auto on loan a while back and it flew.
I drove an Astra H diesel auto the other day and was pleasantly surprised...
Performance wise there is nothing in it worth speaking off, 1/10th of a second or something like that.
Rolling road days have also proved the auto box’s have very little losses now a days.
A true triptronic box is a Porsche box, which is a manual box with an auto clutch.
The Vectra box’s, whether it’s 5 or 6 speed, are still auto box’s, as such they have a management system and built in safety’s etc, so don’t expect a instant response to manual changes.
Don’t get me wrong, the “triptronic” side of things is still very useful for certain things, but racing up through the box is not one of them.
Oh, and there is still one very distinct issue with the auto box’s, and that is economy, which to be honest is still rather poor, the auto box will cost you 4-6 MPG compared to the manual box on the equivalent car. (depending on engine spec and how/where you drive it)
I love my auto to bits though, and wouldn’t want to be without it now.
