    Default Petrol Fill Message

OK after some thoughts, got the 31 mile warning on the way home. No issue as live near a petrol station, filled to the top and 53.18 litres tank takes 61. Wonder why I got the 31 miles message with nearly 8 litres of fuel left, especially when I am getting about 36 MPG. I know you should not run the tank dry but this is a long way off dry.

Do you want to take the risk.....

Its probably headroom for the user so hyou don't run dry and the component tolorences making the "problem" look worse.

Not going to take the risk, just thought the amount left in the tank was a bit high.

Mine does the same (or worse) - got the 31 mile warning last night after a run up the M5. Needle was in the red (but no light), and I just about managed to get 50 litres in.

Trip reckoned on 410 miles range after filling (I wish!!).

a couple of months ago i left for work (70 mile round trip) with 50 miles left on the comp. Forgot to take my wallet but didnt realise till i went to fill up on my way home. So had to try to drive sensibly as not to run out of fuel. 31 miles left on the comp screen the fuel icon on the screen came up. I was sh**ing it. 10 miles away from home and with 5 miles on the screen the little orange fuel light started to flash. I thought i was gonna run out of diesel. Traveled 5 miles with 0 range left on the screen. I know you shouldnt run the tank dry but i had little option. The needle was right on the bottom red.

The petrol moves around the tank as you drive, so the sensor probably picked up the low reading when the petrol was swirling round the tank, so you actually have move in that what it thinks. Thats why the light sometimes goes out when you leave the car stationary for a while.

8 litres is about a gallon and a half
If you have been flat footing the last 200 miles, then the average MPG will be lower
As a result, if you took it very easy on this final 8 litres, the warning message might switch it itself off!

I have this on my SRi, where the range message appears and counts down from 30 to 10
However, if I take the next 50 miles at 50mph, I can watch it slowly go back and then switch off!

If the low petrol warning light comes on, then I head to a PFS as quick as!

Driving steady at about 50mph in 5th/6th gear with the red light on, needle hitting rock bottom and range guage showing 0 for the next 15miles i made it to a garage.. At this point I filled her up with 59.21 litres... But dont fancy my chances doing it again though.. (wasnt by choice doing it either)
