confused 19 CDTi (120) poor fuel cons

    Hi,

I've had an 06 veccy SXi 1.9CDTi (120) for 2 months and have been getting on average 35mpg over a full tank.

Have done a complete fill to empty and logged the mileage and it's pretty consistent. Doesn't seem to matter how I drive either. Drove 1 tank's worth really really carefully and didn't seem to make any difference.

Got the car from Arnies and they basically refused to look at it although they did say they would expect more. Car is supposed to have been serviced before I got it.

Local Vauxhall garage did mention that the O2 sensor may be gubbed but that this should show up on diagnostics or car would have no power. I did think about getting an ELM327 or something similar to look at O2 sensor profile but wasn't sure if that would be useful or not.

Not sure if it's got a DPF or not (how can I tell?).

Typical driving is 20 mile round trip to work with a mixture of urban / rural. Average spd approx 30 MPH.

My old 10-yrd old Rover 420 TD returned at least 40MPG for same journey getting hammered pretty hard.

Any thoughts would be most apprecaited. So far I've only been able to find comparrisons on 150 engine.

    Cheers.

    Whats ya mileage?

My 06 Sri was pretty dissappointing at first 35-38 on the motorway. However it did get better and rose to around 42. With my remap I'm getting 45-50 no probs.

The fuel cons on my 56 plate 150 keeps getting better, as above I was getting 38mpg when I first got it, after 20k I went to London at the weekend & was showing 60mpg when I arrived

Sounds quite low, but would depend on the type of driving you do. I have a 55 plate 1.9SXi 120; and I get 600miles from a tank; or about 48-50 mpg. Car completely std, no tuning boxes or remaps (yet ); and I do 350 miles a week on dual carriageway and good A roads; with most journey's being my 30 mile commute. This has been consistent for about 9 months, or since 10k on the car.

Have you checked things like tyre pressures? maybe do an oil change yourself see if it improves? how about draining or changing the fuel filter?

I have had an 07 Zafira 1.9 120bhp for the last 7 weeks whilst my 06 Siggy Elite (150bhp) has been in for warranty work. The Zafira only done about 4000 miles, my siggy about 12000 miles

I normally get somewhere between 44-48 mpg out of my Siggy, whereas for the last 7 weeks (doing the same sort of driving) I have only been getting about 35 mpg out of the Zafira.

I have to say that, if I had bought the Zafira, I would be mighty unhappy with the fuel consumption. I know it is a bulkier/taller motor than my Siggy, but it is supposed to be lighter in weight, so I would have though consumption would be about the same.

For the record I did get 69 MPG through the variable speed limit area of the M42 at 50Mph on cruise with the remap...However that's not what the map is for.

There's nothing wrong with it mate, one man's urban isn't always another's, remember it takes 6 miles to get up to op temps as well, and if most of your journey is at 30 mph, it's kinda urban even if the road isn't.

    Thanks for replies.

It's done just over 24k miles and commute is 30 / 50 / 70 mph mix with an overall average of approx 30mph. Engine temp seems to be at normal running temp maybe 1/2 of distance into commute.

I know the car is heavy but I'd have expected a bit more based on the common rail engine (and claims from Vauxhall).

Good old arnold clark have been unable to tell me what has been done at the service but at 22k it was supposed to have had a major service so I guess that includes oil and filter???

    Cheers
