Default Trying to do the maths...

after a bit of a financial scare im back on track for upgrading my old 95 2.0 SRI to a veccy C The initial plan was to get myself a 2.2 direct SRI (I was actually planning to buy neils face lift model off of him before i found out that i may be losing my tenants and facing a nasty mortgage). However all is well again

The dilema facing me now is that I've stumbled across a 3.2 petrol GSI in black on an 02 plate (46k on the clock and in immaculate condition for £5.5k). Planning to take it out for a test drive on weds.

Now this car would be cheaper than a 2.2 direct to buy but obviously its a bit of a petrol guzzler. What im trying to work out is how much more it is likely to cost me to run the GSI over the direct.

The journey i take each day is 16miles (8 miles each way) to work. I sit at 30-40mph for the morning run as i leave early with probably 2 miles at a crawling speed and then on the return journey im looking at about 4miles at a crawling speed and the rest again at 30-40.

I've already worked out that my insurance is an extra £150 for the GSI (not bad i thought) and my road tax an extra £100. Just couldnt do the math on the petrol costs. If anyone is bored at work or something and fancies having an estimate for me that would be awesome

From what I've read on here the GSI is going to be really fun to drive just need to justify the costs to myself

Also is that a good price for a GSI ?

I had a 2.2 Direct and the minimum I ever got, driving around town was 29mpg. On a run you'll get 36mpg or more.
I guess with a GSi you'll get low 20's round town, but the GSi lads will be able to advise on that..
Have a read of this, give you an idea about the 3.2

My 2.2 gives me 33/34 round town all the time, and on a trip to Swanage at Easter, gave me well over 40mpg doing 90 all the way. Thats worked out properly as well, not on the Dash Computer.

Lets just say we'll have to agree to disagree there mate, that or Vx make a petrol engine that's as economic as a diesel one.

2.2 petrol will do 22-27 urban depending on conditions, 32 ish mixed

    3.2 petrol will do 15-22 " " " " " , 27 ish mixed

Blinmey some early forum posts on here

So if I said that petrol wise the 3.2 would cost around an extra 25% over a 2.2 direct would I be far off the mark ?

That's about the long and short of it, what you need to decide really is do you want a fully loaded old model with whizz under the pedal, of a rather smart looking facelift that won't have as many toys but will still please under the pedal.

    Vehicle : Jaguar XF 3.0D V6

    Trim : Black

    Engine : 3.0D V6

    Year : 0000

As you only do very little mileage, I wouldn't even bother calculating the difference. It's really not worth it. Even if you did 16 miles every weekday (ie no holidays) thats only just over 4000 miles a year. Plus what ever running about you do (which you don't specify).

28 mpg or 32mpg will mean about £90 difference for the year for that annual mileage. So from a cost perspective, it is totally irrelevant what car you drive.

    The choice is yours
