Default Tyre Question - Extra Load and Reinforced

Just looking on blackcircles.com and it has some tyres as Extra Load and some as Reinforced. Are they the same thing? Would they both be ok on my 3.0?

    Cheers.
    Andy

I just rang blackcircles.com and they said for the 3.0, as long as a tyre is 94W or higher then its the correct load rating. The annoying thing is they dont put the load rating (number bit) on the website. They only put the letter (speed rating).

Unfortunately they can mean the same or different depending on the manufacturer and or the type of tyre!,as has been said go by load rating number not a description.

The term extra load usually refers to a tyre with a higher load index where the the same size tyre is available with a lower load index.

The normal size fitted is 215/50 R 17 and for the 4 cylinder engine models has a load rating / speed index of 91W whereas the 6 cylinder diesel is a 95W.

I use Pirelli P Zero Nero with a 95Y rating. The alternative 18'' tyres are not available with 95W and are normally 94W.

Reinforced means that the tyre has extra plies (often 6 or 8 instead of the usual 4)and is used by vans, trailers and caravans etc but not cars.

nope! a car tyre has either ONE or TWO plies NEVER 6 or 8 like you've stated.

The difference is in the TYPE of ply used i.e. more cords per inch and the thickness of these cords.

Did you read the last line of my posting?

I said that 6 and 8 ply tyres are used on vans, trailers and caravans but not cars!

i did and you said "Reinforced means that the tyre has extra plies" i was simply saying that's not the case on cars.
In fact only large goods vehicles have so many plies, HGV plies are made from steel.

I think you will also find a 91W is the lower limit on 215/50/17's for a v6 diesel. If I could afford it I would always go for EL or Rienforced tyres. I mean, why not!
Now I need a turbo to keep up!
