If your going for the cheaper end of the market you could try a Silverline Rotary, about £30-£40. The down side with a rotary is that in untrained hands it will do more damage than good. A rotary goes round and round in the same pattern so if used wrong can burn the paint, eat to much of it or just leave the paint with holograms. There is a product called a Porta cable which is a random orbital machine, its action is much more like the action produced by hand, it still needs respect but is far easier to use and to learn than a rotary, down side is they cost about £200 to get up and running when you factor in transformer and pads. (You can only import them from USA.)

PS, I bought one of those Halford job's, and trust me mate they are just naff. Wax can be put on from the palms of your hands and buffed of with a good miclofiber. You only need to go machine polishing when you want paint correction.

Same as the Porter Cable but it's 240volt so no need for a transformer etc.

I have used one and they are just as good as the PC, if anything there is slightly less vibration and noise, it also uses the same backing plates etc as the PC.

I do.........an angle grinder is waaaaaay too fast and it doesn't have the height i.e. the spindle is too short

Im keen on keeping a well detailed car ...

never felt the need for a rotary, its a lot of cash to pop on something you will rarely use and the money would be better spent on some quality detailing kit / products..

if your paintwork needs rotary attention, find someone who is proficient, and buy them some beers

once its to a standard, it wont need rotary attention again imo..
