    confused Uneven Tyre wear

I am getting unever tyre wear in the rear tyres on my SRI. When i say uneven tyre wear it's not across the width of the tyre, its around the inside edge of both rear tyres. I have recently been getting more road noise and a humming noise from the rear end, initially i thought it was the rear bearings so booked it into VX to get checked out. The dealer said that the bearings were ok but the noise was due to the tyre being bumpy and upon running my hand around the inside edge i could feel the bumps around the whole tyre.

The dealer said that i was caused my a misallignment OR the rear shock absorbers needed changing (after 36k!!). These were both done and then i replaced the tyres again.

The tyre that are currently on the car are 225/45/17 Goodyear eagle F1 GSD3, these tyres were also on the car when i was getting the noise.

Anyway, the problem has returned!!! I have asked aorund and am not getting any joy on solving the problem.

Another dealer has suggested that it be may have been caused due to the type of tyre on the car, they have suggested running an asymmetrical instead of a direction tread tyre???

Oh, forgot to mention i did not have this problem when the car was new and had 215/55/17 Goodyear NCT5's, but i wouldn't have thought just the tyre size change would cause the problem.

    Can anybody help.

I wouldn't have thought it could be anything to do with the tyres. Sounds like a camber problem....but if it was that should have been sorted if Vx re-aligned the wheels.....

Hmm, is the suspension standard SRi or have you had it lowered?

if you lowered it without adjusting the camber settings it will rip the tyres off in no time ! and i've heard of some VX dealers who dont even know its adjustable !!

    Default Tyre Wear

A Couple of months ago i bought some new wheels 18" and when i got the old ones out of the boot i had the exect same thing, the inside edge was badly worn and even looked like a triangle compaired to the rest of the tyre. these were pirrelli (Not sure that spelt right still) 215-50-17 i put it down to tyres maybe i am wrong.

Havent noticed this wear on the new ones yet but still only a few monts old, wheels look good though....

Similar problem here also on my Signum.

The Factory Fitted 19"s I have with new Toyo TR tyres:

    Had 20K Service 2 weeks ago - VX Dealer noted uneven wear accross all 4 tyres - Diagonaly accross the car - 1mm difference between F -N/S & R - O/S.

Standard Design Suspension - Driven normally (Its an Auto!).

I checked the treads myself and pressures all round also. All Ok - but tyres were 0.5mm diff Fr - Rr. The Dealer got it partly wrong.....

But I have a clonk coming from the fr suspension also - I have a feeling something is not right.....

The car has got standard SRI suspension however what i find unusual is that the problem only started when i had 225/45/17 Goodyear eagle F1's fitted. The old 215 tyres were prefectly ok when i did the changeover to a larger tyre.

Could it be the change in tyre size??
