I had the K&N on my Vec and Signum and have a BMC on my Saab. If you speak to the sales people they all rate the BMC above the K&N I could hear the turbo more when i fitted the K&N and on a rolling road it gave 8lb/ft more torque. I've not RR'd the Saab so don't know the difference the BMC has made. I can hear the turbo whistle though

    BMC link HERE

    K&N link HERE

It is the same size filter for all models.

I've had no problem with the BMC but i had no problems with the K&N's either.

£ for £ the BMC is a very good buy

I've been thinking about getting a performance air filter but after reading a few stories on the net I'm concerned of the long term effects on the engine.
The sole purpose of an air filter is to restict rubbish going into your engine. By fitting a performance filter you not only increase the air flow but are allowing more rubbish into your engine. Often in RR tests people have found that they dont improve power hardly at all compared with just normal OEM paper filters. Sorry to be a party pooper but I'm just trying to justify paying nearly 50 quid for something that doesnt do anything more than a standard filter and could potentially have damaging long term effects.

Also, oiled filters like K & N's could potentially bu66er up your MAF sensor?

True ... but only if you dont do it right ... Do it by the book and
    you wont have any prob.

And about rubbish going into your engine ... you shouldnt buy cheap filters because
they are rubbish in more than one way ....

So what do you need to do to avoid the problem?

I would say time ... I guess most people that fail dont let
the cleaning and reoiling of the filter take the time it req.
Too eager to get the filter back in the car i guess or just
dont read the manual and overdo it with oil.
