Default 2.2 Diesel starts then stops

    Hi all,

Maybe someone out there can help me? My '52 plate 2.2dti elite was working fine this morning when I drove my daughter to holiday club.

Went to start it this afternoon and it started, but didn't rev when i put my foot on the throttle.

    Then it stopped.

Now it will start, idle at 800RPM for no time at all, then stop.

If this was a petrol car I'd lay money on the electric fuel pump by the tank not pumping petrol to the engine. But it's a diesel. Do they also have a fuel pump? The fuse compartment in the boot has a fuse (no 10 - 20 amp) for a fuel pump and that isn't blown, but maybe thats a hang over from the petrol model?

No idea from this point on. I don't even have a Haynes manual for this puppy! When I start it and it stops, I can hear something whirring for about a second before that too stops. Is that the fuel pump?

Anyway, any help you can give would be appreciated mightily.

    Rgds,

    /\/\

Hmmmmm. Vauxhall stealer has diagnosed this as a problem with the injector pump on the diesel engine. A cool £1900 (that right nineteen hundred pounds!) for the part, plus £450 (thats right four hundred and fifty pounds!) to fit same.

Vehicle is currently on its way to Panda Fuel Electrics in Fareham, Hants who assure me they can do it for around £600 for the part. I'll keep you posted.

PS. Since I have just had fitted three new tyres, two new front springs, all new front disks and pads plus new rear pads and a front lower wishbone, just to get this puppy through the MOT, does anyone want to buy a 95k Vectra that is almost brand new under the paint? <G>

    Hi GG,

Yes, and at "only" 95k! What ever happened to diesels going on forever, 120k at least before anything will even think about going wrong etc etc blah blah blah. I'll never trust another vauxhall thats for sure!

Well, who would have thought it?

Having paid for the beast to be recovered to Panda Fuel Electrics in Fareham, they couldn't find much wrong with it! When they got it off the lorry it started and ran fine. They suspected something to do with the "EGR" system and "blanked it off". Not quite sure what they were on about, but "only" cost me £270 inc recovery! Oh, and the air con had packed up again when I collected it.

This heap of junk is being sold as soon as I can get rid of it! The last Vauxhall I'll ever own, I swear.

Blanking off the EGR system (they probably meant the EGR valve itself) is not something I would personally want to do, but it shouldn't really do any harm as such.
However, if this works, then it at least proves where the fault is.
Running a blanked off EGR valve may well effect your economy.
It will certainly effect your warm up times, it will take much longer for the car to warm up, particularly come winter, and it will make your emissions much, much worse until the catalytic converter (not just the engine) is up to full operating temperature.

GG, you seem to have a good idea of what the EGR is - canyou give me the potted version?

There are sites that will explain it far better than I could m8.
Emissions, economy, and performance are likely to suffer if the EGR system is not working properly.
    A brief simplified explanation here.
    Much more detail here.

    Hi GG,

Thanks, the brief simple one was sufficient! Now I understand what they have done and agree that it is "not a good idea". I will get this rectified I think!
