Default problems with 1995 2.0 SRI at idle...

I know it's not a vectra C but hopefully someone has an answer as its bugging me like hell.

My current car (95 vectra 2.0 SRI) has got a very annoying problem. Basically the car revs too low at idle (sometimes stalls or shudders) and when i pull to a stop at junctions it often cuts out. I can solve the problem by tightening it up a little however a few weeks down the line I have the same problem again and have to tighten it again. It has got to the point where im running out of screw thread The airflow jobby which the ECU (i think it is the ecu anyway) plugs into has been changed with no improvement. Im about to sell the car as Im getting a vectra C, and I know I can temporarily fix it with a couple more twists however I'd prefer a more perminent solution for the next owner.

Also the onboard computer display doesnt function now and simply says "program" is there a way to reset this or is it ******ed ?

    Any help would be appricated

    Thanks muchly

are you running an induction kit by any chance? as these engines dont like them and trhey can cause the problems you have mentioned, im not sure where exactly the air idle valve thingy is situated but a workshop manual will help also maybe try some carb or fuel injection cleaner in the intake as it might be coked up and causing problem too

you will have to remove the rubber pipe that connects to the throttle body, once its off you will see to the left of the throttle body a type of long cylinder with a wire connector going to it, thats the ICV, the pic below circled shows roughly where it is under the rubber pipe

my 99 Veccy B had a similar problem, it was a 1.8 (X18XE1) engine. It actually had a fault logged on the ECU as well (eng. mgmt light was on). Had the code read, but can only remember the mechanic saying you could try a new throttle body housing for lots of dosh, might or might not cure it; or just live with it (and the eng. mgmt light).

After finding something on another online forum, I cleaned the throttle body housing; a few bolts (four?) under the plastic engine cover; along with a few pipes and connections and the unit comes away - easy job. Cleaned the whole unit up, including unblocking all the holes where breather hoses etc connect and it did seem to make a difference. Didn't cure the eng. mgmt light though!!! oh and a new gasket is needed, think I made one with gasket paper.

Oh and the eng. mgmt light was cured later - The bulb in the dash blew!!!!
