Default 2.8T + LPG conversion - anyone done it?

I need a bigger car to replace my Astra, so a Vectra Estate is top of the list, probably in Elite trim with auto transmission.

I need more economy so the 1.9CDTi (150) is the obvious choice.

However, the 2.8T is quite economical when the lower cost of LPG is taken into account.

    On paper, it's a no-brainer 2.8T+LPG > 250bhp/350Nm/42.8mpg compared to the 1.9CDTi > 150bhp/320Nm/40.4mpg despite the £2000 conversion cost.

Has anyone done it, what's it like to drive?

you need to look at the cost of the conversion and how many miles you need to drive to just pay for the cost of it

I think you'll be looking at £2500 to convert iirc.

Only do it if you do more than 25k per annum and are going to keep the car longer than 3 yrs.

    Personally I'd get a 3.0 CDTi myself.

The 3.0CDTi doesn't have a high enough towing limit - in estate automatic form it's only 1200kg, the same as my current Astra.

    2.8T @ 42.8mpg????
    1.9CDTI @ 40.4mpg????

The 1.9 should be getting around 49mpg average and the 2.8T will use more fuel if anything on LPG it just costs less, so 40.4mpg (which would be very high for a 2.8T) is likely to drop into the 30s.

LPG in the 2.8T may actually decrease performance where as in a diesel, it increases performance.

According to Vauxhall, combined fuel consumption for Vectra Estate automatic are:-

    1.9CDTi > 40.4 mpg

2.8T > 25.2 - on LPG this would drop by 15% to 21.4 - since LPG is half the price of unleaded this is EQUIVALENT to 42.8, ie marginally cheaper to run a 2.8T+LPG than a 1.9CDTi.

^^ Well, the Automatic (like in the first post) 1.9 CDTi does indeed have an official combined figure of a pathetic 40.9mpg. Godness knows why that is, but you'd be crazy not to go for the V6 auto in favour of the 1.9 auto. Manual is a different story.
Looks to me like the topic starter has worked out an equivalent mpg for the LPG 2.8 (when the cost of fuel is taken into account).

edit: ah beat me to it, there you go

just think how far you need to drive to pay for the lpg job on the car you may even find that your warranty may be void if you do it to a vxr
