My understanding is you remove the allen bolts and then use the Double DIN keys (or a pair of normal ones bent to fit or maybe an old coat hanger) and the radio will be able to be removed without the lengths your brother has gone to!

Need to go to halfrauds and get the "double din stereo removal tool"..... its like a piece of coathanger wire bent into a U and releases the 4 catches in each of the holes simultaneousley. when inserted into the holes on either side push the tools away from the centre and and pull.

If i've confused you let me know.

you can ( and i have done ) bend a single din removal tool to fit the double ( well 1.5 din cuz thats what it is ) stereo facia

a small tip, get a small bit of insulation tape or masking tape around the holes, it will stop you from scratching the unit with the removal tool,
