    Default Oil Warning Light

    Hi all

    I've got an '02 2.0 DTi - wierd thing is happening.

    When the engine is hot and idling the oil level warning light comes on but goes off when i rave the engine or driving. I've checked and topped up the oil. No sign on leaking or loss of performance.

    Any ideas?

    Is it the correct grade of oil your using

    either that or it sounds like the engine is internally worn as revving the engine increases the flow of oil in a worn engine and will put the light out..this requires more serious, professional investigation

    the car was last serviced by the vx dealer in january so im assuming they used the correct oil.

    With regards to a worn engine wont that cause excessive smoke, loss ofpower and excessive oil consumption? Veccy is sufferring from none of these.

    Does anyone know what happens if you dont replace the oil filter when servicing?

    it will just restrict the flow to the point where the filter bypass valve will open.. nothing else dramatic will happen

    When i say 'worn' i don't mean anything to do with the pistons or rings which is the type of wear you are describing..The waer i am talking about is the crankshaft main bearings and Con rod bearings.. these have a very large affect on the oil pressure within an engine, and if worn can drop the oil pressure quite dramatically..for my money, it's either a worn oil pump, or a stuck pressure releif valve inside the oil pump... or more worryingly the bottom bearings worn out.

    the car is going to an independent garage in the morning - i'll see what the have to say. I have notice the oil filter is covered with oil - could i have a filter with a damaged seal?

    you could have a damaged seal, but that would go hand in hand with massive oil loss as the oil moves round at quite a rate, if the seal had failed then i'd expect the sump to be empty

    Finally after 4 days i get a phone call from the dealers. It turns out the oil switch is leaking and needs replacing. Im hoping to get her back tonight.
