    Default Council Tax Band Snooping

Just had a letter saying tax bands are being reviewed and " that they will need to have internal access to your property "

Why ? Well they can go and . What on earth's happening with this country ? You just can't make it up

I read about this on the BBC (IIRC). As I understand it they can ask for access but have no legal grounds to force access. They're talking about looking at extensions and censervatories etc.

thought it was a stitch up but no, it's true. apparently someone in the street has complained about the banding. told they would be carrying id. well they can carry whatever they want, they ain't coming in. council acccept this and they'll assess it from the road.

    phew, relief

now they won't see those 24 foreigners I'm putting up 8 to a bedroom and only charging them £70 a week each

A lot of houses were assessed as a '2nd gear' basis. Ie they originally drove past and estimated the price of the house, and therefore the council tax banding

If it's the Council, they don't have the right to gain access (I work for a council's finance section - please don't shoot me).

But the banding for council tax is actually set by the Valuation Office which is part of the Inland Revenue, and they DO have legal access. They actually have more rights of access than any other government department including the police.

The odd thing here is that it sounds as though it's your Council that want access. As I say the Council doesn't set the band, just how much each band pays, do I don't know why they would want access to your property. It certainly would not be routine, but they may have been "tipped off" if you have had an extension built etc and they may want to look & determine if they should apply to the IR to get you re-banded.

It was often referred to as 3rd gear, cos they didn't slow down that much - lol

    Sorry just re-read your post.

The person who complained (presumably that their band is too high, although some actually complain that their's is too low!!!) would prompt the visit to see how their property compairs to the others in the immediate area, i.e. if yours is a band lower & looks similar they may reduce their band. BUT BE WARNED they can equally say that your neighbours is correct & you have been in too lower band.

Again its the Valuation Office (inland rev) that would make the decision, not the Council.

Oops, it does indeed say valuation officer and VOA. Just saw 'your council tax band' and jumped the gun. Do you think £70 pp is about right ?
