confused 17" tyres. Advice Please :-)

I need to replace all 4 tyres on my Signum 1.9CDTI(150). It currently has 215/50R17 91W's on it Cost for these tyres are around the £105 mark (tyre only) and with the recent bad press tey have been getting i've been considering others.

The same sized Avon ZZ3 are coming in at about £90 a pop, but i noticed that Avon ZZ3 225/45R17 91Y's i can pickup for about £65 a pop. Using one of the online variance calculators, they say there is a -2.01% diameter variance (the don't recomend more than a +/- 2.5% variance) between these and the 215/50 that are currently on. Also the Avon ZZ3/235/45R17 are about £68 a pop which have a -0.61% diameter variance. A possible saving of £160 is not to be sniffed at.

Now I know that the smaller the wheel diameter , the less distance you cover with one complete turn of he drive shaft, and it might slightly effect the speedo calabration and MPG, but what I want to know is

    1) can I fit wide tyres to my standard 17"alloys ?

    2) will the tyres foul on any part of the car?

    3) what are the pros/conns of using a wider tyre ?

    4) has anyone got anything to say about AVON ZZ3's?

    5) are there any other tyre models people can honesty recomend?

most tyre fitters wont fit the wrong size tyre, have a look at conti sport 2's - great grip & reasonable price.

BTW on a diesel you need high load tyres !

    You can go to 225 / 45 / 17's, There's no cons, plenty of pro's.

Best by far has to be the Goodyear Eagle F1's.

I swear by them, won't fit anything else. Very grippy and at least 20000 miles from them too.

Had Avons on another car before, Never, never again.

There's no need to worry about any mods at all and Vauxhall actually recommend them.

VX actually recommend the 225/45/17's as an alternative.

and as it's a 150 CDTi you won't need extra load tyres, they are really only on the V6 CDti..

I'd fit 225/45/17 goodyear eagles as well....ours are lasting very well....

    Eagle F1s all the way.
225/45/17 should be no more than £100 each fitted max.

Hasn't Nutron fitted 235's to his 17" wheels? Or am i making that up?

But definitely go for 225/45/17 Goodyear Eagle F1's. Probably about £80 or £90 a corner, but so, so worth it.
