'P' mode on an Automatic

I've got a Corsa Automatic at the moment and wondered what the 'P' mode actually does.... ???

I know I have to engage 'P' when Parked... but what does it do ??? ... and why dont manual gearboxes have a 'P'

I believe placing an auto in 'P' is just like leaving your car in gear when turned off.

"P" locks the transmission, so the car can't be moved. Pretty well makes the handbrake redundant, so never engage it while the car's moving, like I did once while parking in a hire car in the States. Even from 5 mph, i had to peel my face off the windscreen!
