    Default Strange air filter !

My car was a parallel import from Cyprus, never registered and declared new in the UK this month. It was sold to me as full UK spec and it appears to be, but having a look into the air box to see if it had the restriction on the lower half I noticed the standard paper filter has a sponge / nylon type layer stuck over it.

Im guessing this is a more restrictive and better level of filtration required for the hot & dusty conditions in Cyprus, anyone any experience or knowledge of these ?

I havent bothered removing it as Ive ordered a pipercross panel filter so it will be out in a few days. It had already (after 250 miles) the standard vauxhall only half the filter dirty pattern which made me consider cutting back the air feed pipe that goes half way into the box.

Car is a 1.9 cdti 150 astra sport hatch

it does sound like an export edition setup, as you say, set up for poorer conditions..where a higher level of road dust is to be expected and hence a higher level of filtration is needed..

don't get tempted to cut back any pipes in the lid of the airbox, they are there for a reason..only remove or cut anything before the filter..

The pipercross foam filter is no better than a standard paper filter, in rolling road tests I found it made no difference over a paper one but a cotton filter gave around 10bhp.

Sorry mate, still it may make a difference over the more restrictive one you have? Bet that makes you feel better! Or maybe not.

i noticed my 2.2 dti had the same sort of air filter, it had some sort of filtration material on, a bit like a scotchbrite pad, covering the underside of the filter. I just assumed this was standard. Got a k&n on now.

no, mine's a uk registered model. My old peugeot 307 hdi had exactly the same material on the air filter aswell. Here's a pic of the 307 filter just to show what the material is like. Sorry cant take a pic of the veccy filter, chucked it when i replaced it.

I thought that there had been a thread on here which referred to older style filters having the foam bit??

Yeah, the foamy thing is pretty standard now.

I gave up on K&N filters - just stick to the OE ones now. Seeing light through a filter is bad, finding fine sand in the turbo is worse.
