Is this all town drivin'? If so sounds about right. I average about 27mpg around town. (i drive like an old woman)

Sounds a bit suspect ! Surely you should be gettin' more than that, has the car been serviced recently? On longer runs - (sorry no motorways this far north) I'm gettin between 34 - 40mpg....

Are you sure your computer isn't set to US units (rather than UK).
One UK gallon = 1.21 US gallon. Check you're computer settings and if you're lucky you'll get an instand 21% decrease in your fuel consumption.
This happened to me and I was really disappointed with my MPG.....until I corrected the computer settings.

P.S. I now get 30-32 in town and 36 or so on the motorway - and mine's automatic

Car was bought in May, its been into a local dealer who put it on the tech 2, with no faults whatsoever.

I do have the odd blast but who doesnt, but sheesh I could run a P1 for the amount of petrol im putting into this thing.

Serviced back in may 2, car has done approx 34,500 miles

how do I check the units?

There are options on the computer.....language, units and some others I can't remember.
Go into the units menu and in it you are offered metric, US, UK and Japanese (I think).
Select UK and press the stalk button to highlight UK, then back to return.
If this is the case and you were on US, the correct MPG will be displayed immediately.
