    Default What do you regret!

The 'radio 2' discussion on another thread got me thinking about my younger days and decisions I'd made that changed my life, some good-some bad.

I think the biggest regret I have is leaving the Royal Navy. If I'd stayed in, I'd be a Lieutenant-Commander now, with four years to retirement. I think I'd would have had a significantly greater feeling of achievement, than I do with my present job. I remember how proud my mum was when I was accepted to attend BRNC Dartmouth and how disappointed she was when I subsequently left. I really miss the jokes and the camaraderie. I remember rolling rotten cabbages primed with bird chargers into the Wardroom on Trafalgar night. Huge bang and bits of cabbage plastered everywhere. Do that today in the Police and you'd be getting your P45.

The only flip side is that I would've missed a lot of my kids growing up. I just can't help wondering what could've been and where I'd be now.

Ditto Paul. Regret isn't exactly the word that I would use, but I do miss being in the Royal Air Force for exactly the same reasons you've mentioned above. I too would of missed a lot of my children growing up and the wife wouldn't have the career that she has now.

Life is all about compromises isn't it? You make your decisions and take the rough with the smooth.

your not missing much in the forces at the minute, the Air force has gone down hill, and you are always going away now only plus point like you mention is when you come out you get to spend time with the family..

regret staying in the forces, but its only for the family and it keeps the bills paid even if you are ill.

Bearing in mind that when you sign the dotted line your not signing up for 22 years sat in an office, nor should you be expecting a walk in the park just to earn the queens schilling. It is unfair to say that the forces are going down hill just because we are away so often.

were going away so much because there arent the people to split the detachments up with now .. so its totally fair for Lee to say that ( I dont see 'walk in the park expected' in his reply wither .. )..
its one of the signs of the direction the forces ( well, Air Force for definate ) are going.

it is going downhill, its un-recognisable from 10 years ago ..

to be honest MLC, any sort of morale / comraderie inducing activity is frowned on now .. our crew-room walls are devoid of all the funny pics, caption competitions etc that they were once plastered with. 95% of the guys treat it all as a 9-5 job ( albeit usually 12 hour + shifts)

I know Im safe in saying anyone who left 5 years back, then joined up again now, would be hard pushed to recognise the place they once left .

Must be nice to know what rank you would have attained to, hard work doesnt get people promoted anymore..

shame that the populace of the UK no longer has pride in its Armed Forces.. seems to be society as a whole.. 'as long as Im alright Jack' ..
on a recent visit to the USA, at a water park, they made all the ( not just USA) armed forces people stand up, a big thankyou, standing ovation.. awesome, they know what their forces do for them huh

Well, apologies, thats the thread totally thieved :S

I don't regret much, I'm fairly easy going and go with what life sends me.

Having said that, I did Maths at Uni and walked straight out into an IT job. Been in IT ever since (8 years) and I always regret not doing a computer science degree.

Not much to regret I know, but it does rankle me sometimes. Didn't realise how into IT I would get (and it does pay fairly well S73VE!!).

    Nothing.

    I think that's important.

You can't change the past. You can make your own future though.
